The incident resulted in the death of her owner, 63-year-old Jeffrey Carl Simons, a native of Iowa. Following the accident, Hennessy was left stranded and in need of care, prompting swift action from animal welfare organisations.

Rescue efforts began immediately as the KCHA found Hennessy and noticed an area code from Iowa emblazoned on her collar. This sparked a coordinated effort between the KCHA and the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown (ARLM) in Iowa to find the dog’s family. ARLM shared Hennessy’s story on social media, revealing that she had been adopted from their shelter in 2019 and had lived a cherished life with her owner.

As news of Hennessy’s plight spread, the ARLM began their own search for her family. They soon discovered her “next of kin,” facilitating a FaceTime call that allowed Hennessy to reconnect with familiar voices. The ARLM described this interaction as a significant boost to Hennessy’s spirits, stating, “It seemed to lift her spirits tremendously.”

By June 24, plans were underway for Hennessy’s family to travel to West Virginia, driven by a longing to bring her home. The ARLM expressed gratitude towards those who shared Hennessy’s story and contributed to the chase for her family, underscoring the community’s support during this poignant time.

The days that followed showcased a shift in Hennessy’s temperament. On June 29, the KCHA shared a touching video of the canine joyously reuniting with her family. She happily bounded over to a man—presumably a relative—who showered her with affectionate words and gestures.
