In 2024, James Dilon Wilks, a devoted father and husband, faced a life-altering diagnosis of heart failure, stemming from years of excessive alcohol consumption. His journey is not merely a story of survival, but a testament to resilience and the importance of prioritising one’s health.

Wilks, a 32-year-old from the US, first began noticing alarming symptoms in late 2024. He experienced chest pain and sudden blackouts, alongside an overwhelming sensation of drowning when lying down. Despite these warning signs, it wasn’t until his hospital admission in October that he learned the severity of his condition: heart failure. Medical professionals informed him that years of heavy drinking had severely impaired his heart’s ability to function.

The Mayo Clinic describes heart failure as a condition where the heart muscle is unable to pump blood efficiently. This can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, rapid heartbeat, and shortness of breath. Initially, Wilks was frightened by his diagnosis. “I was scared at first because I was so young and had a family depending on me,” he said in an exclusive interview. He struggled with denial, as the diagnosis felt incompatible with his previously healthy lifestyle.
Following his hospital treatment, Wilks was discharged with a regimen of medication and regular medical follow-ups. He believed he had successfully managed his condition. However, nearly a year after his initial diagnosis, tragedy struck when he suffered a cardiac arrest on December 7, 2025. In a heart-wrenching moment, he died in his living room, witnessing the anguish of his children. Fortunately, he was resuscitated and remained in the hospital for further treatment.
In the days following, Wilks endured two more near-fatal episodes before being transferred to UCSD La Jolla, where he received a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). This mechanical pump supports the left ventricle, the heart’s primary pumping chamber, by assisting in the circulation of oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. Wilks credits the LVAD with saving his life and, six months later, he has adjusted to its presence as part of his daily routine.
Despite returning to work and spending time with his family, living with the LVAD presents significant challenges. He can no longer submerge himself in water and must take precautions while showering to protect his medical equipment. Additionally, severe nerve damage in his legs, caused by previous treatments, has made walking difficult for him. He has also had to adapt to life with the driveline — a cable that exits his abdomen, requiring caution to avoid pressure on the site.
These modifications have impacted his interactions with his energetic young sons, aged 10 and 8. Wilks expresses a deep longing to engage in physical play, stating, “It’s difficult having two rowdy boys who want to play and have fun with me… I want so badly to be able to play with them and spend time the way we used to.”
Despite these struggles, Wilks’ near-death experiences have fostered a profound shift in his outlook on life. He now cherishes every moment, gradually changing his focus from the future to appreciating the present. Not only does he strive for a better future, but he also savours the small joys of daily life with his family, reflecting, “My wife and kids are the reason I fight so hard every day.”
Encouraged by his transformative journey, Wilks has taken to social media to share his experiences and raise awareness about heart failure and living with an LVAD. His platform, @adadthatbeatdeath, has garnered thousands of followers, with many videos reaching millions of views. “The support has been amazing,” he remarked, expressing his gratitude for engaging with followers who reach out to check on his well-being.
Looking ahead, Wilks hopes his story will prompt others to take their health seriously. “I hope people see my story and find the courage to go to the doctor,” he said, urging individuals not to delay seeking medical help. Wilks embodies the strength, determination, and belief needed to thrive despite adversity, and he aspires to inspire others with similar struggles.
His journey highlights the critical importance of health awareness, especially the impact of lifestyle choices, and serves as a powerful reminder of what truly matters in life: the love of family, the drive to live fully, and the courage to seek help when needed. As Wilks continues to navigate his challenging new reality, he remains committed to using his platform to educate and uplift others.
