Alyssa Fisher, a 30-year-old mother from Houston, has recently found herself at the centre of an unexpected and uplifting turn of events in her life. Just weeks before her scheduled hysterectomy, Fisher discovered that she was pregnant with her second child, a development she describes as feeling “too good to be true.”

Alyssa’s journey towards this pregnancy has been marked by numerous challenges. After welcoming her first child, daughter Olive, who is now five, she and her husband, Breckan, faced the emotional turmoil of multiple miscarriages. In an attempt to expand their family, they had been trying to conceive for a year but suffered two chemical pregnancies alongside Alyssa’s ongoing struggles with endometriosis, adenomyosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

In searching for assistance, the couple consulted a fertility specialist who recommended in vitro fertilisation (IVF) as their only viable option. This suggestion, however, was not one that Alyssa welcomed. She recalls feelings of loneliness and frustration throughout her attempts to conceive during a period she describes as one of her most difficult. “I felt tired and exhausted. I had done every medical and natural remedy I could think of,” she stated.
As Alyssa continued to struggle with painful menstrual cycles brought on by her conditions, her obstetrician referred her to a minimally invasive gynecological surgeon. By this point, she felt mentally depleted and questioned her ability to manage the everyday challenges of life. Her physical health had deteriorated to the point where she remarked that endometriosis was consuming her life.
The diagnosis of adenomyosis, which typically coexists with endometriosis, affirmed her need for a surgical solution. Alyssa was advised that while a hysterectomy could provide significant relief from her challenging symptoms, the reality was that it would also mean giving up on the dream of having more children. This led to a period of mourning for her, as she had to come to terms with the prospect of never being pregnant again.
Despite this painful acceptance, Alyssa found solace in her faith and ultimately felt confident in the decision to proceed with the surgery. “My everyday life was being consumed by an incurable disease, and I was constantly in pain,” she reflected, adding, “If I could give myself another chance to feel better in life, I needed to do that.”
Preparations for her surgery were in full swing when an incredible twist occurred. Two weeks prior, Alyssa noticed her period was late, which prompted her to take a pregnancy test—a seemingly futile effort—but she was astonished when the faint line appeared. This unexpected news unfolded like a miracle, leaving her in disbelief. “It just seemed like such a shock. I had also finally accepted the fact that I would never have another baby,” she recalled of that profound moment.
As Alyssa enters her third trimester, the excitement of welcoming another daughter in November is tempered by lingering fears. The physical toll of her pregnancy has been daunting, with severe morning sickness and dizziness. Yet she strives to maintain a positive outlook. “It’s an honour to feel this bad,” she said, expressing deep gratitude for the opportunity to carry a child.
Looking forward, Alyssa is thrilled at the prospect of completing her family. Daughter Olive is eagerly anticipating her new role as a big sister, further adding to Alyssa’s sense of closure regarding her fertility journey. She feels optimistic about what lies ahead, knowing that she will no longer question what could have been.
In sharing her story, Alyssa hopes to inspire others who are on their own paths to parenthood. She encourages those facing fertility challenges to advocate for themselves, explore all avenues to become parents, and not to lose sight of the potential for miraculous outcomes. “If you don’t like a doctor you are seeing, seek another opinion,” she advises. “Don’t ever discount yourself as someone who could receive a miracle. They truly do happen every day.”
As Alyssa and her family prepare to embrace their new chapter, she reflects on the profound emotional journey that has shaped their lives and the joy that still awaits them. As she aptly puts it, though fraught with difficulty, her experience is a testament to the resilience of hope.
