Jordan Lucas, a 22-year-old openly gay volleyball player from California State University, Northridge (CSUN), is making waves in the sporting world while simultaneously championing the LGBTQ community. Recently, Lucas gained fame for his vibrant personality and distinctive playing style, distinguishing himself on the volleyball court. “People either really love the way that I play, or people really hate it, but regardless, you’re still talking about me,” he stated, expressing pride in his ability to stand out.

The athlete’s rise to prominence took a sharp turn after a controversial comment made by UC-Irvine broadcaster Charlie Brande during an April 9 game. Brande remarked on air, “I’m amazed Jordan Lucas hasn’t been popped by somebody,” and described Lucas’s behaviour as “very distasteful.” The backlash against Brande’s statement was swift and severe, prompting him to issue an apology. This incident catapulted Lucas into the spotlight, with his flamboyant court moves, which include hair flips and finger gestures, capturing the public’s attention.
Reflecting on the negative remarks, Lucas acknowledged that he felt “shocked” by Brande’s comments but reaffirmed that he is used to facing criticism. He notes, “I’ve received hate comments and negativity throughout my athletic career,” indicating that such encounters have been part and parcel of his journey. Amid this adversity, Lucas has embraced the opportunity to act as a spokesperson for both the LGBTQ community and LGBTQ athletes, citing a significant underrepresentation of these groups in sports.
Lucas comes from an athletic family; his brother has played basketball professionally, and both his parents have backgrounds in sports. Although introduced to volleyball at the age of 13 while waiting for his father’s basketball practice to end, Lucas quickly developed a passion for the game. He attributed much of his confidence to observing and learning from older LGBTQ athletes throughout his youth, which fostered a sense of belonging and inspiration.
Theo Edwards, Lucas’s coach at CSUN, has been familiar with him since he was just 14 years old and expressed disappointment over Brande’s comments. Edwards noted the overwhelming support Lucas received following the incident, adding, “I was just really grateful to see the number of people rally behind [Lucas] in support.” He emphasised the importance of this incident as a moment for change and validation within the sporting community.
Since the incident, Lucas has enjoyed a surge of attention, with features in various media outlets, including a segment on *Good Morning America*. He expressed that, although the influx of recognition was overwhelming at first, he is grateful for the platform it provides to advocate for diversity in sports. “In sports, we’re so underrepresented and we don’t get as much love because we’re not the stereotypical player,” Lucas remarked, underscoring the importance of diversity in athletic roles.
Despite Lucas’s increasing visibility, he faced a personal tragedy when his mother, Christina, succumbed to cancer earlier this year. During this challenging period, Lucas chose to keep the news private from his teammates, aiming to earn respect through his performance rather than receiving sympathy. He ultimately shared his mother’s passing with his team in a heartfelt speech at the end of their season, an act that demonstrated his strength and vulnerability.
Outside of volleyball, Lucas maintains an active lifestyle, enjoying games of pickleball and Wiffle ball with friends and family. His interests also extend to travel and music, with a particular fondness for artists such as Tate McRae and Megan Thee Stallion. He has taken time to focus on self-discovery and personal goals, stating, “I don’t let volleyball dictate my life anymore.”
As he considers the prospect of a professional career post-college, Lucas remains grounded, prioritising personal growth and identity. With the support of his coach and friends, he is encouraged to continue pursuing his dreams and making a significant impact within the realm of athletics.
