Metallica, the iconic rock band renowned for their powerful music and commitment to social causes, has made a significant contribution to Cardiff Foodbank amidst a pressing food crisis. During their recent European tour, the band donated £20,000 (approximately $26,000) to the charity following their performance at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on June 28. This gesture marks one of the largest celebrity donations to the foodbank and is poised to provide much-needed support to vulnerable individuals in the area.

In an announcement shared on social media, Cardiff Foodbank expressed their gratitude and excitement regarding Metallica’s contribution. The statement revealed that the donation could facilitate the provision of around 9,000 meals, effectively aiding approximately 1,000 people in need. The timing of the donation is particularly vital, as the foodbank has experienced a notable 27% decline in food donations this year, making Metallica’s support even more impactful.
According to Cardiff Foodbank’s CEO, Rachel Biggs, the process of receiving the donation was quite surprising. Biggs recounted that her team initially received a straightforward email stating, “This isn’t a scam, please get in touch with the foundation.” Upon making contact, they were informed about the generous donation, which Biggs described as “an incredible amount of money that will make such a difference.”

The forthcoming funds are expected to relieve some of the critical shortages the foodbank has been facing. In a recent social media post, Cardiff Foodbank shared their concern about empty shelves and a lack of essential items, such as long-life fruit juices that are vital for their emergency food parcels. Biggs acknowledged this worrying situation, stating that despite the consistent need for their services, the decrease in donations has greatly affected their ability to stock essential items.
The CEO pointed out that while the number of individuals requiring assistance remains steady compared to last year, the significant decline in food contributions has left their shelves alarmingly bare. “When this donation arrives in our bank account, we’ll be able to place a bulk order to replenish our stock,” she added. The hope is that this generous support from Metallica will help bridge the gap until further community support can be rallied.
Metallica’s charitable endeavours are facilitated through their All Within My Hands Foundation, which was established in 2017. The foundation is dedicated to fostering sustainable communities by focusing on workforce education, combating hunger, and providing assistance to other critical local services. The rock legends have consistently used their platform to make a positive impact, and their latest donation is a testament to that commitment.
Following their current M72 World Tour, which wraps up on July 5, Metallica will embark on a new residency titled “Life Burns Faster” at Sphere in Las Vegas. This residency, set to run from October 2026 to March 2027, includes a total of 24 shows, indicating that the band remains as active in the music scene as they are in charitable causes.
The donation from Metallica has not only brought immediate relief to Cardiff Foodbank but also serves as a reminder of the importance of community support in challenging times. As food banks across the UK grapple with increasing demand and declining donations, gestures of generosity like this can have a profound and lasting impact on those in need.
