Health officials across the United States are sounding the alarm as cases of the West Nile virus continue to rise, with Arizona experiencing the highest number of confirmed cases this year. Recent statistics indicate that 19 cases have been reported in the state, alongside one tragic death linked to the mosquito-borne illness.

The West Nile virus has no cure, underscoring the importance of preventative measures to reduce the risk of infection. The disease remains asymptomatic in most individuals, but the latest figures from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal that out of 28 confirmed cases across nine states, 24 have escalated into neuroinvasive illnesses, representing the most severe manifestation of the virus.


In Arizona, the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) confirmed that an older adult with existing health complications succumbed to the disease on June 16. This distressing event serves as a critical reminder to the public regarding the seriousness of the West Nile virus.
Further cases have emerged in other states as well. In California, a resident from Long Beach has been hospitalised with a neuroinvasive illness related to West Nile, but has since been discharged and is recuperating at home. This case marks the first symptomatic incidence of West Nile in the state this season. Meanwhile, in Texas, a woman in her fifties from Montgomery County was also admitted to hospital due to a neuroinvasive illness. She is the second Texas resident confirmed to have the virus this year, following an earlier diagnosis in Harris County.
Larimer County in Colorado has reported a resident being hospitalised as well, though authorities indicated that the individual may have contracted the virus during recent travel outside the state. The ongoing spread in various regions highlights the persistent threat posed by the West Nile virus, especially as warmer weather encourages more outdoor activities.
Given that no effective treatment or vaccine exists for West Nile, health organisations are advocating for robust prevention strategies. The CDC recommends wearing long, loose-fitting clothing that limits exposed skin, ideally avoiding outdoor activities during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Additionally, the agency advises the use of insect repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. However, parents are cautioned that the last two ingredients are not suitable for children younger than three.
Typically, the West Nile virus is transmitted through bites from infected Culex mosquitoes, which acquire the virus by feeding on the blood of infected birds, as clarified by the CDC. It is important to note that human-to-human transmission is extremely rare, with exceptions occurring only in specific scenarios such as mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Symptoms of the virus can range from flu-like indicators, including fever, headaches, and body aches, to severe health complications. Approximately one in five affected individuals exhibit symptoms, while a small fraction may develop more serious symptoms like encephalitis or meningitis, conditions that can result in paralysis or even coma.
In light of the increasing mosquito activity, MCDPH’s epidemiology supervisor, Melissa Kretschmer, emphasised the pressing need for community vigilance. She expressed concern regarding the latest fatalities and asserted that it is crucial for residents to actively engage in preventive measures. “We encourage residents to take prevention seriously by using insect repellent, eliminating standing water around their homes, and protecting themselves from bites whenever outdoors,” Kretschmer stated.
As summer progresses and the threat of mosquito-borne illnesses persists, public health officials are advocating for a united front in combating the West Nile virus. Promoting awareness and prevention measures can help mitigate the risks associated with this potentially devastating disease, ultimately protecting communities from a virus that has claimed lives and left others with life-altering complications.
