In a remarkable achievement, twin brothers Alberto and Steven Torres have graduated from Notre Dame High School in New Haven, Connecticut, taking the top two spots in their class. Alberto, 18, proudly earned the title of valedictorian while Steven followed closely as salutatorian. Their academic success is a source of pride not only for themselves but also for their family, as they break new ground as the first generation to attend college.

Reflecting on their unexpected rise to the top academic positions, the brothers initially did not set out with a goal of being the best in their class. “We just wanted to be like in the top 5%,” said Alberto, a resident of Hamden. When they learned from their guidance counsellor about their standings, they were taken aback. “We were like, ‘Oh, wait, that’s crazy,’” he added. However, knowing they were contenders for valedictorian and salutatorian motivated them to further their efforts.

The twins, who moved to the mainland from Puerto Rico at the age of seven, faced the challenge of learning English while navigating elementary school. This journey has been particularly significant for them, culminating in the graduation ceremony on May 9, which coincidentally also marked their birthday. For Alberto, receiving the valedictorian trophy was an emotional moment that recalled the hard work and dedication required to achieve this milestone. “I got a flashback of all the memories of all the things I had to do to earn it. It felt surreal,” he remarked.
Steven echoed Alberto’s sentiments, recalling that receiving his salutatorian award was a reflection of the sacrifices made. “I was thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, all these late nights finishing a project for biology were worth it,’” he shared. Their academic journey highlights not only their personal determination but also the support system they built around themselves.
Instead of succumbing to sibling rivalry, the brothers found strength in their relationship. They often studied together, helping each other during challenging times. “There’ll be days where I’m at a track meet and I’m not coming back home late, and I know that we have a biology exam in two days. So Steven will make the quiz and then he’ll share it with me,” Alberto explained. Similarly, during Steven’s commitments in school plays, Alberto would step in to assist him with the schoolwork. This collaborative approach has been a significant factor in their academic success.
The twins also attribute their achievements to the unwavering support of their family. From a young age, they showed a preference for intellectual engagement over typical adolescent pursuits. “Instead of asking to hang out with friends, we asked if we could go to a model UN debate from 8-5,” Steven recalled. This dedication to education was encouraged by their family, who always advocated for pursuing their interests.
As they prepare for the next chapter in their lives, both brothers will be attending Boston University this autumn. They described their decision as a fortunate coincidence, influenced by the strong financial packages offered by the university. “We’re like, ‘We’ll go wherever gives us the most money,’” Alberto stated, highlighting the practicality in their decision-making.
Both twins plan to embark on a pre-med track, aiming for careers in medicine. In addition to their personal aspirations, they are eager to inspire other family members. “We want them to know going to college is an option. Pursuing a career and pursuing a degree is indeed within reach,” Alberto expressed. Their ambition is to lay a foundation for future generations, demonstrating that the pursuit of higher education is not only possible but attainable.
As the Torres brothers celebrate their achievements, they serve as role models for their family and the community, reinforcing the importance of hard work, collaboration, and dreaming big. Their story underscores the possibilities that accompany determination and ambition, reminding all that success is achievable with dedication and support.
