At 25 years old, Dan had relocated from California to Alaska, where he met Amber. The couple enjoyed a delightful date on the evening of July 13, 2003, sharing excitement about starting a relationship. Shortly thereafter, however, tragedy struck. The following morning, while fishing with a friend, Dan encountered a mother bear, which led to a brutal attack that left him clinging to life.
As Dan has expressed, the moments that followed were a blur of horror. The bear attacked, dragging him and causing severe injuries that left him blind and in a medically induced coma for almost two weeks. As he later learned, doctors were astonished he had survived at all, with one report declaring his condition was “incompatible with life.”
In the initial stages of his recovery, Amber was unaware of the gravity of Dan’s situation. She had only been promised a phone call after his fishing trip but received no such communication. Initially believing “what a jerk” of a man he must be for not reaching out, Amber’s perspective shifted dramatically upon discovering Dan’s plight through the news. Without hesitation, she rushed to the hospital, although Dan’s family initially sought privacy regarding his recovery and relationship status.
When Dan emerged from his coma, his thoughts turned to Amber, eager to see her. Expecting uncertainty from her side due to their recent interaction, he was relieved when she stood by him with unwavering support. Their paths diverged, however, when Dan had to return to California for further surgeries, forcing them to part ways. Four months after the attack, Dan was released from hospital care, only to hear from his brother that Amber might be dating someone else—a revelation that struck him hard.

Encouraged by her words, Dan returned to Alaska the following year, where Amber was waiting to greet him at the airport. As the couple embarked on their married life, Dan was keenly aware of not wanting to be defined solely by his injuries or dependent on Amber. He sought a new purpose and pursued a master’s degree in social work at the University of Alaska Anchorage, which he completed with honours in 2009.
