The search for a father and son who went missing during a hike in Hawaii has been officially suspended after extensive efforts by local authorities. The duo, a 49-year-old man and his 16-year-old son, disappeared while exploring the Hanauma Bay Rock Bridge Trail on Tuesday, 23 June.

The U.S. Coast Guard, alongside local agencies, commenced their search shortly after the pair’s disappearance. During a press conference held on Friday, 26 June, officials reported that search teams had covered over 1,000 miles of land and more than 100 coastal miles in their efforts to locate the missing hikers. Despite these exhaustive searches conducted from dawn until dusk, authorities ultimately called off the operation around 7:30 p.m. local time when they were unable to find any trace of the pair.

Honolulu Fire Department Captain Keopele Gowan expressed his condolences to the family during the press briefing, stating, “We’d like to extend our thoughts and our sympathies to the family.” His comments resonated deeply as communities grappled with the tragedy and the dangers associated with hiking in the area.

The father and son had set off from their hotel at approximately 7 a.m. on the day of their disappearance. Shortly after beginning their trek, at around 8:45 a.m., a passerby discovered a backpack belonging to the father near the trail.
