**Couple Transforms Dated Fixer-Upper into Dream Family Home**

In June 2021, Courtney Babbs and her husband took a significant step towards home ownership, buying a smoke-damaged property in Overland Park, Kansas. Their journey from seeing a neglected house to creating a warm family home reflects both determination and creativity.
The couple’s decision to purchase a home in their ideal neighborhood came after a series of turns in the competitive housing market. Having faced repeated rejection in their bids for move-in-ready homes, they stumbled upon a house listed for $320,000 that most buyers would have overlooked. Despite its lacklustre condition, Courtney and her husband saw potential where others saw problems.
Courtney, now 30, recalled their initial impression of the property, noting the desperate need for refurbishment. The previous owner, an elderly man, could no longer maintain the house, leaving it with grimy surfaces and smoke stains. “It was overwhelming to walk in,” Courtney admitted. “Stains on the ceilings, yellow walls, dust everywhere. Everything was covered in filth.”
However, rather than being deterred by the state of the property, the couple found it invigorating. They recognised the inherent value of the home, declaring it the “ugliest house in the best neighbourhood.” Family members and friends were less optimistic. Many couldn’t grasp the couple’s enthusiasm; some even expressed regret at their purchase. “My dad wanted to cry when he saw our house,” Courtney recalled, revealing how their willingness to embrace the challenge was viewed with skepticism by others.
Ultimately, it was the beautiful neighbourhood surrounding the house that sealed the deal for the Babbs. Situated among oak-lined streets and unique homes, they envisioned more than just a house; they dreamt of a future family life in a community they adored. “We knew we were making a long-term investment in our future,” Courtney added.
Once they finalised the purchase, the couple quickly set to work, moving into the house in July 2021. Initially planning to limit their renovation costs to £100,000, they ended up spending approximately £150,000. A significant portion of the costs was saved by undertaking much of the work themselves. Courtney explained, “We saved hundreds of thousands of pounds by tackling a lot of the projects on our own and calling on relatives when we needed an extra hand.”
Over the next five years, the couple embarked on an ambitious project to renovate the home while balancing life’s demands, including planning a wedding and starting new jobs. Each renovation phase was carefully timed, focusing on one room at a time to mitigate the chaos of living in a constant construction zone.
The challenges were significant. “It was tough on our relationship,” reflected Courtney. “But I believe every couple should undergo a renovation together; it can bring you closer in unexpected ways.”
As time passed, their labour began to pay off. The house slowly transformed from a shamble into a curated space, each room designed with their family in mind. Significant attention was paid to practical layouts that enhanced daily life. This was particularly true in the kitchen, once cramped and cluttered, but now efficiently configured. “I love our kitchen and how it works for our family,” Courtney said, highlighting the strategic changes they made to maximise space.
Five years on, the once-detested property has blossomed into their dream home. Much to their delight, the pungent smoke odour and dismal state of interiors are now distant memories, replaced by inviting rooms that showcase their hard work and intentional design choices.
Reflecting on their journey, Courtney emphasised the importance of patience and consistency in their renovation process. “Taking our time but working on it persistently allowed us to make decisions we don’t regret,” she said.
