Authorities from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office reported that the collision occurred shortly after 2 a.m. when Fortune’s white BMW collided with a black Cadillac driven by Sung Bae. Tragically, Bae was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Fortune was reportedly celebrating his 20th birthday earlier that evening. The document claims that he admitted to drinking during the festivities, which took place at a friend’s house around 10:30 p.m. before he left for a local Taco Bell. He remained at the fast-food outlet until closing time.

After the crash, Fortune stated to the police that he could not recall the timing of his last drink. Investigators have alleged that the BMW involved in the incident was registered in the name of Fortune’s father.

Witness accounts from two passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident indicated that one of them removed alcohol from the car after the collision. Furthermore, one passenger described Fortune’s driving as reckless, estimating that he was travelling at speeds between 70 and 80 miles per hour when the incident occurred.
The crash resulted in Bae’s vehicle veering off the road before crashing into a light pole and subsequently striking two trees. This tragic incident has prompted an outpouring of condolences for the victim’s family. Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan expressed heartfelt sympathies in a statement, remarking, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Bae as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.” He also highlighted the ongoing dangers of impaired driving, urging the community to make responsible choices and avoid getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
As of now, it remains unclear whether Fortune has entered a plea regarding the charges against him. The authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, and the case has raised serious concerns about the consequences of impaired driving, especially among young adults celebrating milestones.
The legal process surrounding intoxication manslaughter charges can be complex, and if found guilty, Fortune could face significant penalties, including lengthy imprisonment. This case is another reminder that the tragic effects of reckless behavior can devastate lives and families in an instant.
As the community comes to grips with this loss, local officials are likely to reiterate their commitment to traffic safety and the importance of adhering to laws that govern driving under the influence. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office has called upon residents to remain vigilant and responsible, reinforcing that the stakes of impaired driving could not be higher.
The aftermath of the incident not only impacts those directly involved but resonates throughout the wider community, underscoring the need for continued awareness and education on the implications of drinking and driving. As this case progresses, many will be watching closely to see how the legal system handles the tragic consequences of the events that unfolded that night.
