Dad and 4 Boys Disappeared During Evening Fishing Trip. 24 Hours Later, They Were All Found Safe by Rescue Helicopter

A family in Montana, who had gone missing for nearly 24 hours during a fishing trip, was found safe by search teams on Wednesday. Paul Klimpel, 40, along with his three sons and their cousin, had been reported missing after they failed to return as expected from their outing north of Butte on the evening of 23 June.

The group comprised Paul and his sons — 16-year-old Landon, 14-year-old Parker, 13-year-old Pace, and 10-year-old Knox Klimpel. Their disappearance sparked an extensive search operation, which began after they were last seen leaving Butte around 6:30 p.m. local time on that Tuesday evening. Reports suggest the family had travelled to areas including Brown’s Gulch, American Gulch, Flume Gulch, and Bernice during their fishing trip.

A family friend, Courtney Mosier, highlighted the urgency of the situation. She noted that three of the boys required insulin, which further pressed the need to locate them quickly. Mosier described Paul Klimpel as an experienced outdoorsman and expressed confidence in his ability to handle adverse situations should they arise during the trip. She reassured those concerned that the boys were in the care of a capable adult.

The extensive search efforts continued throughout the night and into the next day, with rescue teams from various agencies mobilised to locate the missing family. Their determination paid off when, around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the group was found making their way along a road situated north of Maney Lake. It was revealed that their vehicle, a Ford Ranger, had become disabled, forcing them to abandon it.

Following their discovery, a rescue helicopter from Malmstrom Air Force Base provided immediate assistance. The five family members were subsequently transported to a hospital in Butte for evaluation. Reports indicate that all were in good health upon their recovery.

Butte-Silver Bow Sheriff Ed Lester expressed relief over the outcome of the search. “We are very happy that everyone is safe,” he stated, acknowledging the efforts of the rescue teams and the effective collaboration among multiple counties including Jefferson, Anaconda-Deer Lodge, Powell, and Silver Bow. The combining of resources enabled a swift response that ultimately led to the family’s safe return.
