In a bid to celebrate the recent kindergarten graduation of their twin sons, one couple from San Diego has brought a slice of Las Vegas right to their backyard. Shelly Kowatch, 33, and her husband, Casey, 35, creatively transformed their outdoor space into a vibrant pool party reminiscent of the lively atmosphere typically found in Las Vegas, offering an unforgettable experience for their five-year-old boys.
With their usual summer trip to Las Vegas on hold, the Kowatch family opted to host a backyard bash, incorporating fun, kid-friendly twists into their party theme. “The twins just graduated from kindergarten, so we wanted a memorable and exciting way to celebrate with them,” Shelly shared. “Normally, we would head to Vegas for a long weekend, but this year we thought it would be special to create that atmosphere at home.”
The ingenuity behind their celebration included alcohol-free alternatives that ensured a festive, yet family-oriented vibe. Traditional party cocktails were replaced with imaginative delights such as gummy bear Jell-O shots and sparkling lemonade, served in personalised yard cups. Additionally, the couple capitalised on their children’s enthusiasm for play by integrating DJ toys and headphones into the festivities, alongside an inflatable DJ booth that became a focal point for the boys’ entertainment.
As if that weren’t enough, the Kowatchs introduced added elements to elevate the atmosphere, featuring bubble and fog machines that created an immersive party environment. Even the entry was styled to reflect a Vegas venue, with Casey manning a gate where the twins were required to present wristbands before passing through a red velvet rope into the splendidly decorated backyard.
Shelly and Casey made a conscious decision to keep the gathering intimate, inviting no guests, which allowed for a genuine family experience. “We wanted to enjoy quality time with our kids,” Shelly explained. “We regularly take them to the park and enjoy pool days, but we wanted to create something extraordinary that would leave a lasting impression on them.”
The couple was delighted by their sons’ reactions when they first caught sight of the transformed backyard. “Their eyes lit up like Christmas morning,” Shelly recalled, expressing how rewarding it was to see their excitement. “They knew something special was happening, and they loved it! That’s the essence of why we do this.”
Among the highlights of the party was the inflatable DJ booth, which particularly thrilled the twins. “They thought it was the coolest thing ever and played with it throughout the night,” noted Shelly. The family also captured the occasion on film, creating lasting memories for their children to cherish in the years to come. “I wanted to document this so my boys could look back and remember it as a core memory,” she added.
As a creative parent, Shelly hopes that their unique celebration will inspire others. “I enjoy putting together over-the-top experiences for my children that others can see and get ideas from,” she explained. The couple’s playful approach to parenting has sparked interest online, and she acknowledged the viral nature of their party video. “I was surprised by how much traction it received. I expected some controversy around the Jell-O shots and Vegas glasses, but my husband and I haven’t drunk alcohol for two years and want to show our kids how much fun we can have with juice and water instead.”
In a light-hearted note, she added, “As millennial parents, we’re all just trying to have fun with our kids—even if it means being a little unhinged sometimes!”
