Miranda McKeon, an actress and influencer, has opened up about her journey of regrowth and self-acceptance nearly four years after she became cancer-free. The 24-year-old, who rose to fame for her role in the Netflix series “Anne with an E,” faced a life-altering diagnosis when she was informed that she had stage 3 breast cancer at the tender age of 19, shortly after beginning her studies at the University of Southern California.

The diagnosis came after a biopsy revealed a jelly-bean-sized lump in her breast, marking the beginning of a challenging period in her life. McKeon underwent a grueling treatment regime, which included eight rounds of chemotherapy, 25 sessions of radiation, and several surgeries, one of which was a sensation-preserving double mastectomy. However, the emotional toll of losing her hair was perhaps more daunting for McKeon than the illness itself.
Reflecting on this difficult time, McKeon admitted, “I was literally more scared of losing my hair than dying.” The actress had always envisioned herself as a “long-haired blondie”, and as she progressed through her treatments, she found herself distancing from this image. She described the experience of losing hair as a “very painful, miserable process,” and even the most optimistic remarks about the situation were difficult for her to digest. For her, adapting to a new hairstyle that was not her own felt like “pure torture.”

During her youth, McKeon formed a strong attachment to her hair. “I would freak out if anyone but me tried to brush it,” she shared, explaining the intense discomfort that accompanied the prospect of hair loss. To cope, she experimented with wigs and hairpieces but found them to be uncomfortable as she navigated her desire for femininity during her treatment.
Amid her challenging experience, McKeon faced the additional difficulty of attending university, where fitting in was essential. In a previous interview, she revealed that wearing a wig in a college environment felt “super isolating,” as she tried to balance her fight against cancer with the typical developmental milestones of young adulthood. “I felt like I was missing out on that precious time of showing up in the world in the way that I wanted to,” she lamented.
In a bid to save her hair, McKeon explored scalp cooling, a method that aims to reduce blood flow to the scalp and limit the harmful effects of chemotherapy on hair follicles. Unfortunately, this strategy did not yield the desired results. During her final round of chemotherapy, she decided to embrace the situation by shaving her head, though she initially hesitated, feeling that making an involuntary haircut choice was suffocating.
Describing the moment of shaving her head, McKeon recounted a release of tension: “I felt a little bit of relief and acceptance.” She found empowerment in the act, stating on Instagram, “I have realised that I am beautiful for my contributions in conversations, for my humour and vulnerability, for the kind of friend I am and how I show up for those around me. My physical beauty is the least interesting thing about me.”
As her hair began to regrow, it returned dark and curly, vastly different from her previous style. Eager to regain her long blond locks, she soon discovered that she had to alter her hair care routine significantly. The damaging effects of bleaching and styling her new hair led her to embrace a clean beauty approach, which she had adopted while dealing with the scars from her mastectomy.
Now residing in New York and celebrating her cancer-free status since February 2022, McKeon feels “amazing.” Despite her triumph over cancer, she candidly admits to grappling with anxiety regarding the potential for a recurrence of the disease. Additionally, she is navigating the symptoms of induced menopause, which emerged as a side effect of her treatment.
“I didn’t think life could be this full and beautiful,” she reflected on the transformation she has undergone post-treatment. McKeon’s story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and self-acceptance in the face of overwhelming adversity, illustrating that beauty extends far beyond physical appearance and is rooted in confidence, relationships, and personal growth.
