Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California recently hosted a vibrant two-day celebration aimed at honouring the diverse voices within Disney’s “The Power of Joy” creator community. This event coincided with Juneteenth, a significant date commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, and gathered over 100 Black creators who share their unique perspectives on Disney’s influence.

Celebrated on June 18 and 19, the “Power of Joy Reunion” featured a variety of activities designed to foster community spirit and creativity. From trivia games to lively dancing, participants had ample opportunities to connect and engage with one another beyond the thrill of the theme park rides. Disney’s commitment to celebrating diversity was evident in the programming and the selection of events, which included character meet-and-greets and lively panel discussions.
Anastasia Ali, Disney’s Vice President of Inclusive Marketing and Audience Growth, highlighted the significance of the event, noting that the participants are not just influencers, but a diverse array of artists, creatives, and entertainers. “Through their unique lenses and perspectives, they’re able to share the totality of Disney, and what Disney represents to these communities,” she expressed, emphasising the importance of representation in storytelling.
The celebration commenced with a warm welcome reception at the Magic Kingdom Ballroom in the Disneyland Hotel, setting the stage for a deep sense of connection among the attendees. Kalen Allen, a prominent member of the Power of Joy community, spoke passionately about the profound impact that Disney characters have had on his life. Growing up as a Disney enthusiast, he found solace in characters who overcame adversity, paralleling his own experiences as a Black and queer individual.
As the day transitioned into the evening, the festivities featured Disneyland After Dark’s Pride Nite. This event combined pride-themed celebrations such as a parade and special fireworks, alongside shorter wait times for attractions, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for the attendees.
The following day, members of the community gathered once more for Yardfest at the Downtown Disney District, an event dedicated to Disney on the Yard. This initiative focuses on creating internships and mentorships for graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), thereby providing critical opportunities for underrepresented talent in the entertainment industry.
Tinisha Agramonte, Disney’s Chief Opportunity Officer, articulated the company’s commitment: “We recognise that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. As the premier entertainment company, we know how important it is to ensure that we are accessing the best talent out there, and the only way we can do that is by expanding reach and ensuring access and opportunity.” This comment underscored Disney’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and representation in the creative field.
Comedian and content creator Mel Mitchell, who hosted the Yardfest event, shared her astonishment about being invited to join the Power of Joy community back in 2024. “I thought it was a scam email,” she admitted, reflecting on her lifelong admiration for Disney and its iconic figures. Her involvement since then has helped her forge a meaningful connection, drawing her into a tight-knit community. “It truly felt like a family reunion,” she expressed, capturing the heartwarming atmosphere of the gathering.
Throughout the celebration, Mitchell highlighted the blend of joy, culture, and history that characterised the event, particularly in light of Juneteenth. She fondly remembered the joy of bonding with fellow members over shared experiences, games, and the parks themselves, referring to the occasion as a “big Tiana gumbo of culture.”
The “Power of Joy Reunion” not only exemplified Disney’s commitment to diversity and inclusion but also served as a powerful reminder of the impact that storytelling can have when shared through the perspectives of varied voices. As Black creators come together to celebrate their identities and talents, they continue to inspire future generations, ensuring that their stories—and the joy they encapsulate—are heard loud and clear.
