BritBox officially confirmed the news on June 24, coinciding with the airing of the first season finale. Viewers will once again follow the character, portrayed by Ella Bruccoleri, as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery in the aftermath of her nuptials. This special will be produced by the acclaimed Bad Wolf production company for both the BBC and BritBox North America.

The upcoming episodes will be penned by Sarah Quintrell, who contributed to the majority of the first season, and will be informed by plotlines from Janice Hadlow’s novel, which inspired the original series. Asim Abbasi, who directed several episodes of the first season, will return to helm all three of the 30-minute specials, ensuring continuity in craft and vision.
In the season finale, Mary Bennet and Mr. Hayward, portrayed by Dónal Finn, profess their love for each other amidst interruptions from the character Mr. Ryder, played by Laurie Davidson. By the conclusion, the couple is married, setting the stage for exploring their life together beyond the traditional “happily ever after.”
Jane Tranter, executive producer and CEO of Bad Wolf, expressed her delight at the overwhelmingly positive reception the series has received. “We always hoped audiences would fall in love with Mary Bennet’s story, but the response has exceeded even our most optimistic expectations,” she stated. The specials are an opportunity to further explore the characters that viewers have grown to cherish and to depict the realities that follow the fairy-tale ending.
Jess O’Riordan, executive producer and commissioning executive at BritBox, echoed this sentiment, saying, “We know how much audiences have fallen in love with Mary Bennet, and we’re thrilled that her story isn’t over yet. We are so pleased that Mary’s journey will continue for three more chapters and to welcome audiences back into the world of The Other Bennet Sister this holiday season.”
Filming for the specials is set to take place in Wales during the summer. While Bruccoleri’s return is confirmed, additional casting announcements will be made. The production promises to include other familiar faces from the original series, maintaining continuity for the loyal audience.
The original “The Other Bennet Sister” series has resonated strongly with viewers since its debut. BritBox reported that the show significantly increased its subscription numbers, attracting five times more new subscribers within the first five weeks than any prior programme. Such achievements underscore the show’s impact and popularity.
As fans look forward to the festive release, “The Other Bennet Sister” is currently available for streaming on BritBox, allowing audiences to revisit the charming world of Jane Austen’s characters as they continue to evolve in this enchanting narrative.
This three-part Christmas special promises to capture the essence of Mary Bennet’s journey, offering new insights into her life and relationships. With a stellar team behind the production, viewers are in for a delightful holiday treat that will further enrich their connection to the characters they have come to love.
