A recent study examining the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines has been published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open. This comes after the study faced an initial block by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) earlier this year, which raised concerns about its methodological integrity.

The research in question aimed to evaluate how COVID vaccinations impacted hospital admissions, emergency room visits, and urgent care utilisation. According to the findings published on June 23, vaccines were shown to be approximately 55% effective in reducing hospitalisations related to COVID-19 and around 50% effective in decreasing visits to emergency facilities.


In April, officials from the CDC expressed doubts regarding the study’s approach to estimating vaccine efficacy, suggesting that the methodology was vulnerable to producing misleading results. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which oversees the CDC, echoed these concerns without providing specific details on the disputed methods. HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon emphasised the need for scientific reports to meet rigorous standards before publication.
Despite the CDC’s reservations, several public health experts have defended the study’s methodology. They argue that the framework employed in the research is both effective and reliable, having been utilised in multiple studies published in reputable medical journals. This method involved analysing data from patients who were either admitted to hospitals, visited emergency rooms, or sought urgent care due to COVID-19 symptoms. Researchers assessed patients’ vaccination status to compare the rates of positive COVID-19 tests between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.
Public health experts maintain that the approach used in this study is consistent with established practices for measuring vaccine efficacy. Similar methodologies have been successfully employed in various prior studies, reinforcing confidence in the validity of the conclusions drawn.
The contentious nature of the study’s publication is compounded by the political backdrop of its initial suppression.
