Olivia Ponton, the social media influencer and model, has recently raised eyebrows with her claims that she developed a rare genetic condition known as hemochromatosis following a year-long adherence to the controversial carnivore diet. In a TikTok video shared on 22 June, Ponton explained that her exclusive consumption of red meat during this time had adverse effects on her health.

Hemochromatosis is a condition characterised by excessive iron accumulation in the body, primarily inherited genetically. The Mayo Clinic notes that individuals with this disorder typically retain too much iron due to hereditary factors. While the disease is traditionally passed down through family genes, there are non-hereditary forms, such as secondary iron overload, which can manifest due to medical conditions or excessive iron intake. This aspect raises questions about the connection between the influencer’s dietary choices and her recent diagnosis.

In her TikTok post, Ponton recounted her journey over the year in which she adopted an exclusively animal-based diet. Recalling the experience, she stated that her diet consisted solely of red meat and ultimately resulted in her hemochromatosis diagnosis. Although strict adherence to the carnivore diet may lead to higher iron consumption, experts caution that diet alone is rarely the sole cause of iron overload. Nonetheless, some cases suggest that intense iron intake could play a role in developing the condition for certain individuals.
Following her diagnosis, Ponton added a touch of humour by expressing that she had to “teach myself how to like chicken,” as she began to diversify her diet to manage her health condition. In the same video, she showcased her culinary skills by preparing a dinner of chicken salad, elbow macaroni, and some cherries, highlighting her adjustment to a new way of eating.
Beyond her dietary changes, Ponton has also been candid about the impact social media has had on her mental health. In a previous interview on Emily Ratajkowski’s podcast, *High Low With EmRata*, she opened up about her struggles with body image and self-esteem, attributing some of her difficulties to the pressures of online attention. She admitted that before gaining prominence on social media, she had never faced issues related to eating disorders.
“Once I started posting in bikinis, everyone had things to say about my body,” Ponton explained. “So many negative thoughts were always surrounding my body… I started actually hating the way I looked.” Her vulnerability resonated with many young followers grappling with similar issues.
In another instance, Ponton discussed how the constant scrutiny on social media influenced her self-perception. She expressed a longing to share her interests, such as reading, but felt constrained by the expectations placed upon her as a model. “I didn’t post about books for maybe the first two, three years… People were like, maybe you should post about this—this is quite a large part of your life,” she reflected.
Ponton noted that her public persona often overshadowed her other interests and experiences. “I think people know me as this kind of blonde model,” she remarked, as she emphasised the importance of incorporating deeper discussions into her life online.
Despite facing challenges, the influencer aims to foster a supportive community where dialogue is encouraged. “Being able to bring this new light of myself… I want to have a community where we’re able to agree to disagree on certain topics,” she stated.
Ponton’s openness about her health condition and experiences with social media pressures has sparked conversations around the potential repercussions of extreme diets and the fundamental need for a healthy relationship with food and self-image. Her candidness serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in navigating both physical and mental health in the public eye.
As influencers like Ponton continue to share their journeys, it raises essential discussions around diet, health, and the impact of social media on well-being. Moving forward, her story may resonate with those who have faced similar challenges, inspiring them to seek balance in both nutrition and self-acceptance.
