Jordana Brewster has unveiled deeply personal reflections on her experience of motherhood through surrogacy in a recent article penned for The Cut, published on June 22. The 46-year-old mother explained that her journey into motherhood was significantly influenced by a brain condition diagnosed in her twenties. Brewster detailed how a cavernous malformation (CVM), an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in her brain, informed her decision to pursue surrogacy. As she recounted, doctors advised against carrying a pregnancy due to the risks associated with the increased blood flow that could lead to severe complications for both her and the baby.

When she contemplated starting a family at the age of 31, medical professionals outlined the potential peril of pregnancy for someone with her condition. Despite being advised that surgery could address the issue, Brewster opted against it after learning the potential side effects of the procedure could jeopardise her speech and reading abilities. This pivotal choice led her to embrace gestational surrogacy instead.
Welcoming her first son, Julian, in 2013 through a surrogate named Jessica, Brewster felt overwhelming joy but also a sense of disconnection. Describing a sobering moment during a hospital scan, she recalled feeling like an “imposter.” As she drove away, she reflected on how her child was heading to a home that felt unfamiliar and strange to her. The ensuing emotional turmoil left her sobbing in a hotel room, grappling with feelings of inadequacy about not carrying her children herself.
The actress revealed that her feelings of being an impostor extended beyond her initial experiences of surrogacy. She expressed that the societal expectations surrounding motherhood and childbirth intensified her emotional struggles. Brewster recalled a moment when a school head suggested she take time off work to bond with Julian, implying that his behavioural issues stemmed from her parenting. This unsolicited advice confirmed her worst fears and compounded her feelings of shame and inadequacy.
Despite the challenges, Brewster found a sense of relief and community after welcoming her second son, Rowan, in 2016. She noted that having family nearby and creating connections with other mothers helped mitigate some of the shame she had felt earlier. Nevertheless, her journey continued to be marked by challenges, particularly when her medication for CVM ceased to be effective, leading to two seizure incidents and prompting her to consider surgery in 2020, shortly after initiating divorce proceedings from her first husband.
Brewster’s experiences have transformed significantly over the years. Following her surgery, she married Mason Morfit in 2022, signalling the beginning of a new chapter in her life. In her reflective piece, she noted how the surgery may have provided her with the closure needed to reconcile with her decision not to carry her children herself. This journey of understanding allowed her to redefine what motherhood meant to her.
As Brewster put it, genuine motherhood encompasses the daily routines and intimate moments shared with her sons, found in the simple acts of playdates, school meetings, and late-night emergency room visits. “It’s in how I give over my time, energy, and attention day after day,” she affirmed, highlighting the commitment and love required to fulfil the role of a mother.
In the wake of her candid revelations, Brewster has also begun to connect with other mothers who have traversed similar paths. She expressed a strong desire to support those grappling with their fertility journeys, stating, “I think life is all about paying it forward.” Through her openness, she hopes to extend comfort and camaraderie to others who might be experiencing similar struggles.
Jordana Brewster’s insightful narrative underscores the complexity of motherhood and the varied experiences that shape it. Her story serves as a poignant reminder that the path to becoming a parent is often fraught with unexpected challenges, yet can ultimately lead to profound personal growth and connection.
