According to reports from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the store located near Rainbow and Lake Mead boulevards. Police were alerted to the scene following calls reporting that an employee had been shot. Upon arrival, officers attempted life-saving measures, but unfortunately, it was too late for Lucas, who was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Investigators believe the violent outburst stemmed from a series of text messages Brandan had sent to Vasquez’s girlfriend, who also worked at the Five Below store. Court documents revealed that the interaction escalated when Vasquez entered the store specifically seeking Lucas. Eyewitness accounts suggest that a confrontation ensued leading to Vasquez allegedly pulling out a handgun and shooting Lucas multiple times before fleeing the scene in a silver Honda Civic with California plates.

Lieutenant Robert Price, of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, stated that surveillance footage had captured the circumstances leading to the tragic event. The police have since issued an open murder warrant for Vasquez, urging anyone who may have seen him to come forward.
The family of Brandan Lucas has expressed their devastation over the incident. His cousin, Shekiera Wright, described the emotional toll on the family in a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, stating, “This went way too far and our family’s life is forever affected. We’re never going to be the same.” Wright reflected on Lucas’s character, portraying him as a fun-loving individual and a devoted family member who had relocated to Las Vegas from Detroit about four years ago.
Friends and family have shared their sorrow through a GoFundMe campaign set up to assist with funeral and memorial expenses. In the appeal, they remember Lucas as a person who always brought joy and laughter to those around him. “Brandan was simply doing his job when his life was stolen far too soon,” the fundraiser states. It adds that “this tragedy has left our family heartbroken, shocked, and struggling to process an unimaginable loss.”

As of late Monday, Vasquez had not yet been apprehended, and authorities continue to urge anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to contact the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department or Crime Stoppers of Nevada. In the wake of such a tragic event, the community is united in grief, reflecting on the life of a man who was taken from them far too soon.
This incident highlights the potential consequences of misunderstandings in personal relationships and the extreme responses that can arise from seemingly minor conflicts. The police investigation remains ongoing as the search for justice continues for Brandan Lucas and his grieving family and friends.
