Dwayne Johnson, known for his robust physique and charismatic performances, is preparing for another transformative role as he reprises his beloved character Maui in the live-action adaptation of Disney’s “Moana.” Originally voiced by Johnson in the animated version that debuted in 2016, he has once again taken on the iconic role, which is set to hit theatres on July 10, 2024.

In his recent discussion with E! News, Johnson revealed the remarkable lengths he went to in order to authentically embody Maui. This included donning a 40-pound bodysuit crafted from prosthetics. Johnson, who has a history of significant physique transformations for various roles, noted the substantial toll this costume took on both his body and his performance.

The actor has been busy with multiple projects, including his role in “Smashing Machine,” a film set to release in 2025. In that film, he portrays MMA fighter Mark Kerr and, as he explained, had just emerged from an intense filming period during which he bulked up significantly. “I went from Smashing Machine, and I was 50 pounds heavier than I am now,” Johnson detailed. The quick transition left him little time to adjust his physique before stepping back into the role of Maui alongside co-star Catherine Laga’aia.
Johnson acknowledged that maintaining authenticity in the character required considerable effort. He mused, “We are the keepers of integrity, but also the fans are keepers of integrity.” He understood that stepping onto the set of “Moana” looking as he did in “Smashing Machine” would not be acceptable. The challenge was to ensure that his physical appearance was a fitting representation of Maui, the demi-god he first portrayed with immense popularity.
To navigate this challenge, Johnson collaborated with Oscar-winning makeup artist Joel Harlow to create the elaborate bodysuit which featured living tattoos, integral to Maui’s character. “It also worked out great because of visual effects,” he added, noting how the enhanced visual aspect would be more engaging for the audience. However, he wasn’t shy about expressing the discomfort of wearing such a hefty suit, describing it as “hot as s–t!”
Fans of the actor have taken notice of his physical transformation, especially highlighted during his appearance at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival where he appeared noticeably leaner. Over the years, Johnson has openly discussed the dedication and rigorous regimen required to maintain his formidable physique. In a previous interview with Men’s Health, he stated, “My goal was to bring in the best physique of my career,” revealing the constant adjustments he made while preparing for different roles.
Johnson’s commitment to his craft has garnered widespread respect, with many applauding his ability to morph into various characters while remaining true to their essence. As he prepares to don the character of Maui yet again, it is clear that he is ensuring not only the physicality of the role but also the spirit that has endeared the character to fans worldwide.
As anticipation builds for the live-action “Moana,” audiences can expect a double dose of nostalgia and excitement. With Johnson at the helm, bringing his extensive experience and passion into the role, viewers are keen to see how he will embody the beloved demi-god for a new generation. The film promises to be a spectacular visual journey combining Johnson’s star power with the captivating storytelling that Disney is known for.
As the premiere date approaches, all eyes are on Johnson, not just for his portrayal of Maui but for the dedication that he has demonstrated throughout his career. The actor remains a prime example of relentless work ethic and versatility in a challenging industry, continually setting the bar high for future performances.
