Natalie Alyn Lind, the 26-year-old actress known for her role as Oreana Jackson in the hit Yellowstone spinoff series Dutton Ranch, has expressed her delight at the varied reactions from fans regarding her character. Speaking to PEOPLE, Lind shared her enthusiasm for the polarising opinions about Oreana, stating, “I love when people love my character, and I love when people hate my character, because that means that we’re doing something right.”

In Dutton Ranch, Oreana is portrayed as the fiery daughter of Rob-Will, played by Jai Courtney, and the granddaughter of the formidable Beulah Jackson, portrayed by Annette Bening. Lind relishes the complexity of her character and the dynamic it creates with audiences. “It’s really fun to play a character that people either absolutely love or absolutely hate,” she added.
The character’s introduction was rather dramatic; Oreana initially appeared as a damsel in distress, needing rescue from a drunken cowboy, with Carter, played by Finn Little, stepping in to save her. However, the narrative quickly evolves, flipping the stereotype on its head and showcasing that Oreana is far from a helpless figure. Lind notes, “Everybody keeps on making these references to the fact that they think my character is supposed to be a high school student,” which she finds humourous. “My character is actually 24 years old, while Finn’s character is supposed to be 19. There’s a significant age gap that plays into our storyline.”
Despite the confusion surrounding Oreana’s age, Lind remains optimistic that upcoming seasons will unravel her backstory. “I feel like — hopefully, fingers crossed — season two will dive more into her background,” she mentioned, hinting at deeper explorations of the characters’ complexities.
Expectations for the next season include revelations that might explain the troubled relationship dynamics between Oreana and Rob-Will. Lind teased that these storylines would provide insight into why the characters are depicted as “messed up.” She emphasised that the depth of their backgrounds would eventually resonate with viewers, offering clarity and context to their actions.
One of the most compelling aspects of Oreana’s character is her relationship with Carter. Lind likens their dynamic to that of Beth and Rip from the original Yellowstone series. She cited Oreana’s emotional journey, explaining that “there’s a youthfulness that Carter brings out in Oreana.” The actress described her character as grappling with love and vulnerability, portraying a strong-willed individual whose childhood experiences have profoundly impacted her emotional development.
Overall, Lind has been thrilled with the audience’s response, which aligns with her expectations. “I find it boring to play a character that everybody just loves,” she admitted. She prefers characters filled with complexity. “At the end of the day, she comes from a place of sensitivity,” Lind explained, adding that the shades of emotion within Oreana’s character enrich the narrative.
As the daughter of Barbara Alyn Woods, who starred in One Tree Hill, Lind has been immersed in the acting world from a young age. Recalling her childhood, she described the allure of film sets, noting how glamorous and exciting they felt. “There was never anything else I saw myself doing,” she remarked, acknowledging that her lifelong dream has materialised with her work on Dutton Ranch.
In her view, the series feels less like a job and more like a fulfilling expanse of creativity. “This work just feels so special, and it makes me so excited to be back on set,” she said, underscoring her passion for the role.
As Dutton Ranch continues to unravel its narrative, fans can anticipate new episodes dropping every Friday on Paramount+. The exciting development of Oreana’s character promises to deepen viewers’ understanding and appreciation of the multifaceted world created within this acclaimed series.
