Didi Conn, an actress cherished for her portrayal of Frenchie in the 1978 musical film “Grease,” has recently joined forces with Laura Geller Beauty for a new campaign. This initiative draws inspiration from her unforgettable “Beauty School Dropout” scene in the iconic film. At 74 years old, Conn reflects on her storied career and how serendipity played a key role in her rise to fame.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Conn recounted a fortuitous encounter with Henry Winkler, famously known as The Fonz from “Happy Days.” This chance meeting in an elevator in New York City would ultimately lead to Conn landing a role in the beloved TV show. She recalls her time in the city, where she was involved in numerous commercial auditions. “I was doing a lot of commercials when I first started in New York, and a lot of times you’re thrown into a room and somebody’s got to be your husband or you’re on your honeymoon with some guy,” Conn shared.

While exiting an audition, Conn found herself in the elevator with a man she recognised. Initially, she thought he was an actor she had previously worked with. “I said, ‘Hey, how are you?’ And he said, ‘Oh, I’m good. How are you?'” Conn recalled. This casual exchange blossomed into an invitation for coffee, giving the two a chance to chat further.

As they discussed their careers, Conn discovered that the man sharing her elevator ride was indeed Henry Winkler, a revelation that took her by surprise. “And I knew it. I had seen him on ‘Happy Days,'” she said, reflecting on their conversation. Their discussion turned to Conn’s plans to move to California, where Winkler encouraged her to keep in touch.
Following her move to California, Conn found herself auditioning for “Happy Days,” which she described as a pivotal moment in her career. She reached out to Winkler to share the news and, to her delight, he was present during her audition, reading alongside her. Although the verdict on her performance wasn’t immediate, Conn received the exciting news shortly after: she had been cast in the show.
“I called my agent, and they had heard that I got it,” she explained, her joy evident as she presented her gratitude to Winkler. The two have maintained a strong friendship over the years, a testament to the supportive relationships that often emerge within the entertainment industry.
In her latest campaign, Conn aims to connect with audiences in a lighthearted way. The campaign includes a cheeky “Beauty Service Announcement,” which encourages women to forgo visits to expensive salons in favour of simpler, at-home beauty solutions. This playful nod to her “Beauty School Dropout” persona resonates well with her fans as she embraces nostalgia while promoting the brand’s Full Root-ine Hair & Brow Concealing Cream + Powder.
The campaign was launched on June 22 as an Amazon Prime Day exclusive, and Conn’s charm and wit are on full display as she engages with consumers. Her partnership with Laura Geller Beauty not only celebrates her iconic status but also reinforces the idea that beauty should be accessible and uncomplicated.
Conn’s colourful history in show business, enriched by chance encounters and strong friendships, continues to inspire her fans. As she navigates her ongoing career, she remains grateful for the opportunities that have come her way, especially those born out of chance encounters like the one with Winkler.
With her contributions to both film and television, Didi Conn has firmly nestled herself in the hearts of fans across generations. Her latest venture is yet another chapter in a remarkable journey that began decades ago, showcasing her enduring appeal and ability to resonate with audiences old and new.
