In a heartwarming tale of reconciliation and newfound family, Jennifer Skiles, 46, is poised to celebrate Father’s Day with her biological father, Paul Lonardo, 66, after a long journey of discovery and connection. The duo’s relationship truly blossomed earlier this year when Lonardo adopted Skiles in January, formalising a bond that had evolved dramatically over the previous years.

Skiles, a financial advisor residing in Tennessee, expressed a commitment to looking ahead rather than dwelling on the lost time they shared before their reunion. “We’re not going to dwell on the fact that we missed so much; we’re only going to look towards the future and make new memories,” she stated, keenly aware that they would not physically be together on this occasion. However, their virtual celebration promises to be filled with warmth—complete with cake, family, and a gift for Lonardo to unwrap over FaceTime.

The significance of Father’s Day extends beyond mere festivities for Skiles and Lonardo; it signifies the day they learned of their biological connection. “They sent us an email,” she recalled, describing the moment with notable humour akin to a tense reveal on a talk show.

Their journey began in earnest when, in January, more than three years following initial DNA test results, the pair solidified their connection with the formal adoption. Reflecting on this moment, Lonardo noted the remarkable nature of Skiles’ story, as she had to navigate many challenges throughout her life.

Born prematurely on an Army base in Germany, Jennifer’s early life was clouded with uncertainty. Her father was not identified on her birth certificate, and at the tender age of three, her birth mother decided to place her for adoption after experiencing an abusive relationship. “She thought the best thing she could do was to get me into another home,” Skiles explained, which led her to spend her formative years in Virginia.

Though she enjoyed a stable childhood until the age of twelve, everything changed when Skiles fell victim to abuse at the hands of her adoptive father, a situation that only concluded with his passing when she was 18. Her adoptive mother also died of cancer a few years later, leaving Skiles searching for answers about her identity and history. “There were so many questions. The search for belonging and family was so important to me,” she admitted.

The turning point in Skiles’ quest for answers came when she learned her birth mother’s name from one of her sisters. In 2004, she travelled to Germany to obtain her birth certificate, which contained her mother’s Social Security number. Her efforts led her to track down her biological mother, Cheryl Brown, in Texas. “Our bond was tender, and there was no need for an apology or explanation,” she recalled, understanding the complexities of their circumstances.

As talk of her father arose, Skiles began searching for him, but it wasn’t until 2017, after the untimely death of her mother, that she put her search on hold. It wasn’t until she met her husband Patrick in 2019 that she felt a renewed determination to find Lonardo, spurred on by his encouragement and the gift of an Ancestry DNA kit.

While early results yielded limited success, in 2022, a new clue appeared: a match with the surname Santili, associated with her father’s family. Skiles then contacted anyone with the last name Lonardo, seeking assistance. Her persistence paid off when a relative responded, revealing that Paul Lonardo was likely the father she had been searching for.

The two connected over the phone soon after, sparking an immediate sense of familiarity. “As soon as I heard his voice, I cannot explain it; it felt like home,” Skiles shared, reflecting on the instant connection they forged in their conversations.

Their DNA test results corroborated their biological relationship, affirming what had been intuitively sensed. Lonardo recounted his years stationed at Fort Dix in New Jersey, where his serendipitous encounter with Brown unfolded. Despite establishing a family of his own without knowing about Skiles, he warmly embraced her as part of the family upon discovering the truth. “She’s my daughter, like the rest of the kids,” he remarked, highlighting the inclusive nature of their relationship.

The reunion has also fostered bonds between their families, with Skiles indicating that Lonardo’s wife and children have welcomed her with open arms. Photos of her childhood are proudly displayed alongside his children’s, symbolising their intertwined lives.

Now, Skiles is also an author, having documented her remarkable journey in a book, and understands that her trials have led her to this beautiful moment of familial connection. “There was something beautiful around the corner, I just had to keep walking,” she reflected, embodying a spirit of hope and resilience that resonates deeply on this special day.
