An 18-year-old student from Ontario, Canada, has made a remarkable recovery after becoming the inaugural recipient of an avant-garde exosome treatment designed to heal severe burns without the need for skin grafts. Kaitlin Jeffrey sustained significant injuries to her face and neck in December 2025 due to a fire at a fraternity house, which also required medical attention for four others.

After her critical injuries were assessed, Jeffrey was admitted to the Hamilton General Hospital’s regional burn centre, where medical professionals recommended a pioneering therapy aimed at accelerating her recovery. The treatment utilises exosomes—microscopic particles released by cells that play a crucial role in healing, tissue repair, and inflammation reduction.

“The best skin graft treatment would still not return the skin to its normal state, especially for a young person,” Dr. Jeschke explained. With approval from Jeffrey’s family, he and his team became the first globally to administer this cutting-edge treatment to a burn victim. She received two doses, spaced a few days apart, consisting of one trillion exosomes sourced from the United States.
The results of the treatment have been described as “absolutely remarkable” by the medical team at HHS. Jeffrey herself has expressed overwhelming satisfaction with her recovery journey, stating that she feels a sense of gratitude toward her healthcare providers.
