Rope Jump Instructors Don’t Remember Who Was Supposed to Attach Cord Before Woman’s Fatal Fall, Investigators Say

A tragic incident in Brazil has led to the death of 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, who fell to her demise while participating in a rope jump from the Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as the Skeleton Bridge, in São Paulo state. The event occurred on June 13, and investigations have revealed serious lapses in safety measures that have left authorities questioning the conduct of the instructors involved.

According to police, Rodrigues de Freitas was launched from the bridge at a height of approximately 40 metres (about 131 feet), yet her safety equipment was not properly attached. Police investigator Andrea Dantas Levy has reported that the three instructors present at the time of the incident, who are aged 27, 32, and 42, have been unable to recall critical details regarding the safety protocols. They have stated they do not remember who was responsible for attaching the safety ropes or conducting a check prior to the jump.

Instructors have been charged with homicide with dolus eventualis, suggesting that they had knowledge of the potential risks yet proceeded regardless. Footage of the event, which has circulated on social media, shows the instructors lifting Rodrigues de Freitas above their shoulders before launching her off the bridge, despite onlookers shouting warnings about the missing safety rope. Eyewitnesses reported a frantic atmosphere as people realised the gravity of the situation just moments before the fatal jump.

Adding to the tragedy is the fact that Rodrigues de Freitas had aspirations of becoming a physical education teacher and had expressed joy and excitement about the jump on social media shortly before the incident occurred. In her final Instagram post, which included a photo from the jump site, she quipped, “Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge?”

Authorities have also indicated that the operators of the jump were not legally authorised to conduct such activities at the bridge, raising further concerns regarding liability and oversight. Levy commented that the group lacked regulation and had no permission to operate at the site, an alarming detail amidst the already disturbing circumstances surrounding Rodrigues de Freitas’s death.

Following the incident, six individuals have been interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation; however, only the three instructors have remained in custody while investigations continue.
