In a significant shift for the pizza chain, Pizza Hut has been sold for $2.7 billion, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the iconic brand. This transaction was officially announced by Yum! Brands, the former owner, on 16 June, following a detailed review process that began in November 2025.

The acquisition sees LongRange Capital, a private equity firm, purchasing the brand, excluding operations in Mainland China, for approximately £1.5 billion. The deal also includes an earn-out provision of $75 million to Yum! Brands, set to be paid by 2030. This strategic decision aligns with Yum! Brands’ goal to enhance shareholder value while allowing for a more tailored ownership structure that meets the specific needs of different markets.
A spokesperson for LongRange Capital expressed enthusiasm about the purchase, noting their commitment to collaborating with Pizza Hut’s dedicated team and franchise partners. The firm aims to foster the next phase of the brand’s growth through targeted investments designed to enhance customer experience and food quality globally.
Although Yum! Brands will step back from direct ownership, it will continue to supply its technological platform, Byte by Yum!, to Pizza Hut locations owned by LongRange Capital, alongside providing certain corporate services during the transition period. Yum China Holdings, which already operates Pizza Hut restaurants across China, will buy the brand’s operations in Mainland China for $1.2 billion, reinforcing the ongoing partnership between Yum! Brands and Yum China in managing other franchises like KFC and Taco Bell in the region.
The decision to divest the pizza chain is rooted in a comprehensive strategic evaluation. Yum! Brands’ leadership concluded that selling Pizza Hut would be the most effective way to optimise shareholder interest while allowing the brand to adapt its ownership to fit its unique competitive advantages and long-term objectives. According to company statements, despite efforts by the Pizza Hut team to address business challenges, the brand’s performance suggested that a fresh approach to ownership was necessary to unleash its full potential.
In line with its transformation strategy, Yum! Brands has announced plans to close approximately 250 underperforming Pizza Hut locations across the United States in the first half of 2026. This closure represents about 3% of the chain’s US footprint and is anticipated to facilitate the brand’s long-term growth trajectory. During a recent earnings call, Yum! Brands executives highlighted the brand’s struggles, noting a 1% decline in same-store sales globally for the quarter in 2025, despite growth in other regions such as Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
The board of directors unanimously approved the sale, which is set to be finalised by the third quarter of 2026, underscoring confidence in this new ownership arrangement. Yum! Brands remarked on the legacy built by Pizza Hut through the commitment of its employees and franchisees, indicating optimism as the brand embarks on this fresh chapter under LongRange Capital and Yum China.
As this transition unfolds, the future of Pizza Hut remains uncertain yet promising under the new ownership dynamics. LongRange Capital’s expertise in the restaurant sector, combined with Yum China’s operational experience, is expected to position Pizza Hut favourably in the competitive landscape.
Yum China has yet to issue a statement regarding the acquisition, but the development signals a pivotal moment for the long-standing pizza franchise as it aims to revitalise its presence in an increasingly challenging market. The combination of strategic closures and new ownership is anticipated to allow Pizza Hut to refocus its ambitions and cater effectively to customer demands moving forward.
