Lukas Gage, a 31-year-old actor recognised for his roles in popular series such as The White Lotus, You, and Euphoria, has shared insights into his personal journey regarding sexual health. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Gage reflected on the challenges he faced in understanding sexual health during his formative years, which he believes stemmed from a lack of education on the topic.

According to Gage, discussions around sexual health were virtually non-existent during his upbringing. This absence of information led to feelings of embarrassment and hesitation when it came to addressing sexual health matters. “We weren’t having these conversations,” he noted. “So there was more of an embarrassment or hesitation toward it because I didn’t have enough information.” While Gage felt comfortable discussing his sexuality, he admits that this didn’t extend to sexual health, which he frequently avoided due to his lack of knowledge.
As Gage matured, he began to recognise the importance of prioritising his sexual health alongside his overall wellbeing. His perspective shifted dramatically after experiencing a concerning situation in a past relationship, where he contracted two sexually transmitted infections (STIs) from a partner who denied any wrongdoing. This incident served as a significant wake-up call for Gage, reinforcing the need for vigilance in protecting one’s health. “It was a harsh learning lesson,” he remarked, adding that it was essential to remain cautious, regardless of relationship status.

The actor expressed disappointment that discussions regarding sexual health often carry a negative connotation. “I think there’s a misconception just with getting tested or even being on medication, on PrEP [pre-exposure prophylaxis], that that means you’re not being careful with your sex life,” he explained. In contrast, he advocates for a perspective that views taking preventive measures as an act of responsibility. Such actions, he argues, are signs of being well-informed and careful, enabling individuals to enjoy their sexual lives with confidence.
Gage admitted that by becoming more open and transparent about sexual health, he has been able to enhance his own experiences. “As I become more open having these conversations and not having any taboo tied behind it, I can actually have more fun with my sex life,” he said. This shift has not only fostered a sense of freedom but has also enriched his relationships and overall enjoyment of intimacy.
Today, Gage views his commitment to sexual health as integral to his daily routine, comparable to exercise or healthy eating. “It’s a normal part of my routine,” he stated, emphasising the importance of regular testing, being on PrEP, and maintaining open dialogues with partners. “It’s just another thing that I can check off to help me live more confidently and more secure,” he added, underscoring the shift in mindset he has experienced over time.
His personal journey has led Gage to collaborate with Gilead’s HealthySexual campaign, which aims to encourage open, stigma-free conversations and promote the importance of sexual health, including the various HIV prevention options available, such as PrEP. Gage expressed his hope that by sharing his experiences, he can contribute to a broader understanding of sexual health.
“Knowledge is power,” he said. “My biggest hope is that everyone has accessibility and information and resources at their hands and does not feel in the dark about where to start their sexual health journeys.” He further reaffirmed his belief that being informed is incredibly empowering, stating, “I think it’s very hot the more informed you are.”
Through his partnership with Gilead, Gage is striving to break down barriers surrounding sexual health discussions, encouraging others to take charge of their health. His candidness about his own experiences is not just a personal narrative but a call to action for others to engage in proactive health management and embrace their sexual wellbeing confidently.
