Two former college football players tragically lost their lives in Lake Michigan on June 13, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes from friends, family, and the sporting community. The victims, identified as 26-year-old Jalen Shaffer and 24-year-old Philip LoChirco, were former teammates at Wheaton College, where they both left a lasting impact on their peers.

The incident occurred on a Saturday at the south pier of the Pigeon Lake Channel, where Shaffer and LoChirco had gathered with a group of friends. Eyewitnesses reported that as some individuals ventured into the water, LoChirco began to struggle. Shaffer immediately sprang into action, attempting to rescue his friend without hesitation. Tragically, as he attempted to help, he too encountered difficulties and vanished beneath the surface.
Efforts to rescue both men were made by the group of friends present. While they succeeded in bringing one individual to safety, they called for assistance as soon as it became apparent that the situation was dire. Bystanders provided flotation devices, and emergency services were alerted. When first responders arrived, they managed to retrieve both victims; however, despite their attempts to resuscitate the men, both were pronounced dead on the shoreline.

Similarly, LoChirco graduated in 2023 after playing three seasons. Jesse Scott, the head football coach at Wheaton, expressed his sorrow in a statement, describing Shaffer and LoChirco as “brothers” whose legacy would be remembered by those they played alongside.
After completing his studies, LoChirco transitioned to coaching at Wheaton Academy. He was remembered for his enthusiasm and positive spirit, touching the lives of many within the school community. The school’s athletic director highlighted his ability to uplift those around him, noting, “His smile and his laugh lifted people up, and our players knew he cared about them.”
Jalen Shaffer was known for his deep commitment to serving others. As an employee of Bridge Street Ministries in Grand Rapids, his father, Joel Shaffer, shared that his son always placed others before himself. He attributed Jalen’s caring nature to his strong faith, remarking, “He was a person that loved people because of his relationship with Jesus.”
Ryan Waalkes, executive director of the nonprofit where Jalen worked, referred to the young man as embodying the very essence of kindness and humility. Waalkes noted, “Jalen was the kind of person that embodied the love of Jesus. When people saw Jalen, they got a glimpse of God’s nature.”
Family members have been vocal about their loss, with Jalen’s brother-in-law, Kyler Dunn, expressing his hope of a reunion in the afterlife and emphasizing the importance of honouring Jalen’s legacy by living a life of faith as he did.
