In an exciting announcement for nostalgic customers, McDonald’s has revealed the return of its beloved Fried Apple Pie, a dessert that has not graced the menu since the 1990s. Set to relaunch on June 23 at participating locations across the United States, the popular item is being reintroduced to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the nation.

The Fried Apple Pie has a rich history, originating from a family recipe by Litton Cochran, an East Tennessee Owner/Operator. This recipe evolved into a local favourite in the 1960s and subsequently became an enduring classic on McDonald’s menu. However, it was replaced by the baked version in the 1990s, leading to many fans mourning its absence over the years.
Speaking of the Fried Apple Pie, McDonald’s stated, “If you know, you know. If you don’t, June 23 is your chance to find out.” The item features the chain’s signature apple filling, enveloped in a crispy, golden crust – an irresistible treat for many.
Eric Cochran, grandson of the original recipe creator Litton, explained the legacy of the Fried Apple Pie. He noted that his grandmother, Jo Cochran, dedicated months to perfecting the recipe after Litton first suggested it as a dessert option for McDonald’s. “There are certain things that just take you back – and the Fried Apple Pie is one of them. It’s something that people love and remember from growing up,” he shared.
To celebrate this nostalgic launch, McDonald’s plans to construct a striking 35-foot model of the Fried Apple Pie, which will be unveiled from June 23 to July 4. This colossal roadside attraction will be situated off the iconic Route 66, just outside of Chicago, where McDonald’s is based. The fast-food giant refers to this installation as the “McDonald’s Largest Fried Apple Pie,” a fitting homage to the fervour for this classic dessert among its fans.
The giant pie will serve as a pit stop for road trippers and fans, located at 920 N Broadway St., Joliet, IL 60435. To kick off the event on June 23, McDonald’s will host a launch party at the attraction featuring live music, refreshments, and a chance for attendees to win free gift cards. Visitors will also have the opportunity to collect souvenir maps, which will contain interesting facts about McDonald’s while tracing the historic Route 66.
McDonald’s has also rolled out a series of other summer menu items designed to celebrate the festive season in the U.S. Just recently, on June 4, the chain launched the FIFA World Cup 26 Meals and Happy Meals, coinciding with the upcoming World Cup taking place across Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
These FIFA-themed meals include options such as the Big Mac or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets with a limited-edition gold Big Mac sauce. For breakfast, customers can also select between a Sausage McMuffin with Egg or a Sausage Biscuit with Egg, along with hash browns.
In a delightful twist, each meal also comes with one of nine collectible cups featuring soccer legends such as Christian Pulisic, David Beckham, and Ronaldinho, among others. U.S. Men’s National Team star Christian Pulisic expressed his joy at being featured on a McDonald’s collectible cup after reminiscing about childhood trips to the restaurant with his teammates. “Going to McDonald’s after a match was a core part of my childhood, and to now be featured on a McDonald’s collectible cup all these years later is a full-circle moment,” he stated.
Beginning on June 9, young fans will also find a chance to receive one of 23 unique Squishmallows plushies, including those representing the official mascots of the three host countries, as part of the FIFA World Cup 26 Happy Meal.
As the enticing Fried Apple Pie makes its much-anticipated return, coupled with other exciting menu offerings, McDonald’s appears committed to not only honouring cherished food traditions but also keeping the spirit of summer celebrations alive across America.
