In a disturbing incident that shook the Nassau Cruise Port earlier this month, six American cruise passengers face multiple charges after a violent clash with Bahamian police left four officers injured. The confrontation occurred on June 8 and has resulted in fines exceeding $50,000 after the suspects reportedly pleaded guilty to a host of offences.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) released a statement on June 9, detailing how the struggle broke out just after 4:45 p.m. local time. Officers were dispatched to the scene to handle a physical altercation involving several passengers from a U.S. cruise ship. Following their intervention, five individuals were taken into custody at a local police station, where further violence erupted.

The alleged assailants have been identified as Daniella Duran, 22; Gabriella Aguilar, 27; Jaeyln Duran, 19; Irvin Castro, 26; Andrew Tapia, 21; and Jose Duran, 50. Charges against them involve multiple offences, including assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and damaging police property, specifically a glass door, which was destroyed during the attempted escape.
Reports indicate that during the initial altercation, Duran and Castro were responsible for injuring a corporal by dislocating his shoulder, as well as damaging the property of another officer. As a consequence, Daniella was handed a significant fine of $16,600, or alternatively a one-year prison sentence. In addition to her financial penalty, she must provide compensation of $2,500 to the injured officer and $125 to the other affected officer. Castro received a fine of $2,800, also with compensation for the injured officer.
Aguilar and Jaeyln have been fined £11,600 each, facing a similar prison sentence of six months should they fail to pay. Tapia was fined $4,600 with the same prison alternative, while Jose faced a much lighter penalty of $150 for obstructing police, with a one-month prison sentence hanging over him if he does not comply.
All six suspects reportedly cited intoxication as a factor that contributed to their behaviour during the incident, which police described as a “violent struggle.” The police report states that a female suspect threw a chair, resulting in the destruction of a glass door, while a male attempted to break free by kicking out the remaining glass but was swiftly restrained by officers.
The aftermath of the altercation left several police uniforms damaged and four officers with injuries ranging from minor bruises to a laceration on one officer’s mouth. One officer required hospitalization for treatment of a shoulder injury sustained during the clash. In a perplexing twist, initial reports suggest that the detained individuals were treated for minor injuries they sustained at the cruise port.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force did not immediately provide further comments on the case when approached for more information. However, the gravity of the incident has drawn attention to the safety protocols at tourist hotspots and the conduct of visitors in foreign jurisdictions.
This incident highlights ongoing issues related to the management of rowdy behaviour among tourists in The Bahamas, as well as the repercussions for those who engage in violent confrontations with law enforcement. The severity of the fines and potential prison sentences underscores the Bahamian authorities’ stance on ensuring order and safety within their borders, especially at high-profile locations such as Nassau’s cruise port.
As investigations continue and the judicial process unfolds, the focus remains on the implications for those involved, both legally and in terms of their reputations as American tourists in a foreign country. This case serves as a stark reminder of the expectations placed on visitors to adhere to local laws, emphasising the potential consequences of distractions and excesses common in holiday settings.
