Scientists have unveiled a treasure trove of new marine species during an expedition in the South Atlantic Ocean, with 31 previously unknown creatures discovered off the Brazilian coast. This groundbreaking research, conducted by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, highlights the vast diversity yet to be uncovered in one of the planet’s least-explored ecosystems, particularly within the midwater regions of the ocean.

Dr. Kakani Katija, the principal engineer at the Bioinspiration Lab at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, voiced her excitement about the expedition. She expressed that it was a privilege not only to witness this rare and beautiful midwater life but also to contribute to the documentation and promotion of these discoveries through novel, non-invasive methodologies.
