Brandon Claybon, a promising new face in soap opera drama, has taken on the role of Martin Richardson, a senator from the illustrious Dupree family, in the CBS production “Beyond the Gates.” Speaking with PEOPLE, the 37-year-old actor shared insights into his life-changing decision to relocate from Los Angeles to Atlanta, a move he described as unexpectedly swift.

Reflecting on the abrupt transition, Claybon recounted the moment he finally revealed his casting to close friends during a birthday party a week before the move. The celebration quickly transformed from a joyful occasion to a bittersweet farewell, with emotions running high. “It was so abrupt for me,” he expressed. “I didn’t really tell any of my friends until I had a birthday party. They were excited about the show but also shocked by my imminent departure.” He recalled a mix of laughter and tears, stating, “I had a friend crying. I had friends singing. I was like, ‘What is going on?’”
Fortunately, the actual move to Atlanta was relatively seamless for Claybon, who has roots in Tennessee and previously modelled in the city early in his career while studying at the University of Tennessee. Despite his familiarity with Atlanta, he acknowledged the changes that had occurred during his absence. Thankfully, he found support from new acquaintances who helped him acclimatise. “I had some great people to take me under their wing, especially our stage manager, who showed me around and introduced me to good food and good company,” he explained. “These connections have been invaluable, and some of those people are now my close friends.”
Regarding his first day on the set, Claybon admitted he was filled with nerves, primarily concentrating on learning the names and personalities of his castmates. However, that initial anxiety quickly faded as he recognised his sense of belonging in the environment. “I remember going to my dressing room and seeing the number 227. I thought, ‘227, no place like home,’ and that made me feel like I was exactly where I was supposed to be,” he shared.
“Beyond the Gates” premiered in February 2025 and focuses on the affluent Dupree family residing in the fictional Fairmont Crest community, a predominantly Black neighbourhood on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. The soap opera distinguishes itself by tackling significant social issues while ensuring inclusivity, aiming to attract a diverse audience spanning generations.
Claybon articulated the show’s mission to portray human experiences with integrity, illustrating both light and dark sides of life. “In actuality, we want to present genuine characters,” he stated. “People go through difficult situations; you can’t simply categorise everyone as a hero or villain. It’s crucial to depict their flaws and the love they share as a family.”
While the programme indulges in glitz and glamour, Claybon emphasised the importance of depicting reality. “Life isn’t always rosy. Sometimes it storms and rains, but the storms don’t last forever,” he remarked. This belief in the authenticity of the narratives is, in his view, what resonates with the audience.
“I think the audience has faced many challenges in life too,” Claybon explained. “When they see something that reflects their experiences, they feel touched by it.” This genuine connection is likely a significant factor in the show’s growing popularity.
