Joshua Gonzalez, the driver in question, asserts that the cat he took is his long-lost pet. He told local news outlet KGET that he recognised the animal immediately during a delivery at Brenda Wilson’s home. He described distinct features of the cat, such as its “forehead design” and “body shape,” which he claims confirm it as his cat. “I just grabbed him and walked off,” Gonzalez stated, believing he was reclaiming his own pet.
The situation took a turn when Brenda Wilson, the owner of the cat, filed a police report alleging theft. Footage from the doorbell camera appeared to show Gonzalez dropping off a package before taking the cat, named Junie. According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the case is currently under investigation as a potential theft.
Gonzalez has disputed Wilson’s assertions, presenting documents that he claims affirm his ownership of a similar-looking grey domestic shorthair cat, which he adopted in October 2022 for his daughter. The paperwork reportedly lacked any photographs or identifying details that would definitively link it to the cat in question.
Amidst the unfolding drama, Amazon has confirmed that Gonzalez is no longer permitted to work as a delivery driver. The company clarified that he was employed by an independent contractor and has since been terminated. “We’ve been in contact with the driver’s employer, and the driver is no longer allowed to deliver Amazon packages,” an Amazon spokesperson announced, adding that they are cooperating with law enforcement during the investigation.
Wilson firmly believes that Junie is part of her family and has been for years. She pointed out that Gonzalez lived in her neighbourhood previously, suggesting he may have recognised the cat from that time. In response to the viral footage, Gonzalez conceded that the situation does “not look good,” yet he maintained his innocence, insisting he merely sought to return his cat to its home.
