A young man from Pendergrass, Georgia, has tragically drowned while swimming at Lake Lanier on the afternoon of Saturday, June 13. Terrell Shelton, aged 21, went missing during a recreational outing with friends at Robinson Park as they attempted to swim to a nearby island.

According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the group of friends noticed Terrell had disappeared shortly after they set out. When they looked back, he was no longer visible. Despite extensive efforts to locate him, Terrell drowned in the lake’s depths, and his body was recovered hours later at approximately 11:30 PM. Search teams used a remotely operated vehicle to retrieve him from about 14 feet underwater.
Calista Shelton, Terrell’s sister, expressed her shock and disbelief following the tragic incident. “Honestly I was shaking, I was freaking out. My brother is a good swimmer. In a heartfelt tribute shared on Facebook, Calista expressed her longing for more time with her brother. “Terrell, I wish I had more time with you,” she wrote. “I wish we could have one more conversation, one more laugh, one more memory. You will always be my brother, and I will carry you with me for the rest of my life.” She went on to request prayers and support for their family, Terrell’s boyfriend, and all who cherished him during this difficult time.
Lake Lanier, where the tragedy occurred, is known for its extensive recreational offerings, featuring over 690 miles of shoreline and numerous areas for activities such as camping, boating, and swimming. However, it is a site that has garnered a troubling reputation; the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has recorded 203 fatalities associated with swimming and boating incidents in the lake since 1994. Some locals controversially describe Lake Lanier as “haunted” or “cursed.”
