Pruitt, who completed his high school education with a solid unweighted GPA of 3.8—elevated to 4.2 through advanced classes—initially aimed to apply to 50 colleges. Encouraged by the influx of acceptance letters, he significantly raised his ambition to 270 institutions, demonstrating an approach that went beyond conventional wisdom. The College Board typically advises students to apply to between five and eight colleges, but Pruitt was determined to broaden his horizons.
His effort began with a singular goal of exploration. Pruitt’s mother, Alicia Brantley, noted that he wanted to see what opportunities awaited him. He took advantage of the College Board’s Direct Admissions programme and used the Common App to streamline his applications. These resources allowed him to target colleges known for their environmental science programmes, aligning with his interests and future aspirations.
As he settled into a routine, Pruitt became adept at managing the demands of his college applications. What began as a one-day effort for his first application evolved into a well-organised system, where he would return home from school and continue his search for prospective colleges. His mother estimated that he managed to have most application fees waived, further facilitating his ambitious plan.
In addition to impressive academic credentials, Pruitt also boasted a number of extracurricular achievements. He participated in dual-enrollment courses through the district’s Academy for Advanced Studies, earned a commendable SAT score that qualified him for free tuition in Georgia’s public colleges, and actively contributed to his community through an internship with the Henry County Water Authority.
As he continued to receive acceptance letters daily, Pruitt altered his target once again, aiming for a hundred college acceptances. His applications spanned from prestigious institutions to smaller colleges, with a meticulous tracking system via Google Docs to monitor his progress. In pursuit of excellence, he set his sights on a national record previously held by a fellow graduate who had gained acceptance to 231 colleges.
Support from his school community was pivotal in his journey. School counsellor DeAnna Miller-Wooden ensured she was readily available to assist with recommendation letters, responding promptly to requests. “Patrick’s diligence and positivity were truly inspiring,” she remarked, emphasising her commitment to aiding his efforts.
Through his hard work, Pruitt mastered the application process, eventually completing applications in as little as five minutes. “Once you understand what they’re looking for, the process becomes more straightforward,” he stated. Ultimately, he submitted applications to 270 colleges and received offers from all but six, with Dartmouth College being among his few rejections—an Ivy League institution he had long admired.
After carefully evaluating his options, Pruitt opted for Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where he has received a financial aid package estimated at around £260,000 over four years. With the college covering most of his expenses, he plans to apply for additional scholarships to cover any outstanding costs. His mother expressed immense pride in her son, stating, “He is incredibly self-driven and resilient. It has been a beautiful experience to witness the fruits of his labour.”
Dr. John Pace III, superintendent of Henry County Schools, aptly summarised Pruitt’s journey. He hailed it as a testament to hard work, innovation, and undeterred spirit, remarking, “Patrick reminds us that with dedication, focus, and an adventurous outlook, no goal is out of reach. Our district is immensely proud of him and looks forward to his continued success at Knox College.”
Looking to the future, Pruitt is determined to leverage his experience to help others navigate the college application process. His primary advice to aspiring applicants is to remain authentic. “Don’t try to sugarcoat anything or over-impress; be the original person you want to be. If you are genuine in your efforts, you greatly increase your chances of achieving your goals,” he shared.
