A teenager from Wading River, New York, has achieved a significant educational milestone after overcoming a difficult childhood. Leyton Mangiamele, 18, has been awarded the Chick Evans Scholarship, valued at over £125,000, which will cover tuition and housing costs as he embarks on his college journey. Mangiamele moved to Long Island from Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the age of four. What was supposed to be a short family visit turned into a permanent relocation when family circumstances took a turn. He was raised by his aunt for the next 14 years, a situation that provided him with the stability and support he needed to thrive academically.
Reflecting on his journey, Mangiamele expressed immense gratitude for receiving the Evans scholarship. “The Chick Evans Scholarship means everything to my family and me,” he stated. He acknowledged that his upbringing could have diverted him down a much different path, making this academic achievement all the more poignant.
During his formative years, Mangiamele faced numerous challenges, requiring special education services and additional support through counselling and occupational therapy. Despite these obstacles, he managed to transform his academic performance remarkably. He was eventually declassified from special education, enrolled in honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and joined prestigious societies such as the National Honor Society and the Tri-M Music Honor Society.
Mangiamele maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout high school while also excelling as a dedicated athlete in track and field. His accomplishments were formally recognised when he received the Evans Scholarship, which not only evaluates students based on their caddie experience but also considers academic performance, financial need, and character.
The significance of the scholarship resonates deeply with Mangiamele, particularly given the hurdles he has had to overcome. “For a long time, success like this did not feel like something that was meant for me,” he shared. His aunt played a pivotal role in his life, providing an environment conducive to his success. “That changed the day I moved in with my aunt, who gave me stability, support, and the opportunity to build a future.”
Moreover, Mangiamele noted that many achievements once seemed far-fetched. “Given my background, it simply wasn’t expected that I would graduate high school with honors, be a dedicated athlete, or pursue college, but I did,” he explained. He views the scholarship as a testament to the hard work and sacrifices made by his family throughout his upbringing.
Mangiamele’s experiences as a golf caddie have also imparted crucial life lessons. He articulated the professional skills he has developed, including effective communication, building connections, and conducting himself with purpose. “As a caddie, you are responsible for carrying a golf bag through every hole, supporting your golfer along the way. But I carry more than just a bag,” he remarked, highlighting the work ethic and discipline he has cultivated.
Looking to the future, Mangiamele plans to attend the University of Maryland this autumn, marking a significant step in his educational pursuits. “The Evans Scholarship is one of the greatest blessings I have ever received,” he emphasised. “It not only changes my future but it also honours the journey my family and I have taken together.”
