Tyneeha Rivers has played a pivotal role in the rise of New York Knicks star Mikal Bridges, raising him as a single mother while navigating her own educational and professional ambitions. Born in 1996 in Philadelphia to Rivers and Jack Bridges, Mikal grew up with three brothers, Eric, Jack, and Korey.

Rivers was only 19 years old and pursuing a college education when she discovered her pregnancy with Mikal, a revelation that brought considerable disappointment to her family. In an interview with Essence in July 2022, she recounted the painful moment when she spoke to her parents about her situation. With aspirations of being a trailblazer for her family, Rivers felt the weight of expectations from those around her.

“My parents wanted more for me and did not want me to be just another statistic,” she reflected. The stern words from her father, who conveyed the importance of personal accountability, became a crucial turning point in her life. “He told me I needed to figure it out — to not return home,” she remembered, noting that this pushed her to strive for success rather than view her circumstances as insurmountable.
Despite the challenges of single motherhood, Rivers dedicated herself to both her education and her son, working full-time while attending night classes. She proudly stated that Mikal credits his determination and resilience to the fact that he never witnessed her give up in difficult times. This unwavering strength has evidently shaped Mikal into a standout athlete, leading him to excel at Villanova University and eventually enter the NBA Draft in 2018.
Rivers’ career has flourished alongside her son’s rising star. After a decade of hard work, she obtained her degree in business administration and went on to hold significant positions in human resources for prominent organisations, including Merrill Lynch and the Philadelphia 76ers. Demonstrating her entrepreneurial spirit, Rivers founded her own firm, Nova Dawn HR Consulting Partners, in 2024 and established Nova Dawn Yoga & Pilates in Philadelphia the following year.
Reflecting on Mikal’s early potential, Rivers recalls recognising his talent during his elementary school days. “People probably thought I was legit crazy because I was saying he was [bound for the NBA] in the second grade,” she joked. As he progressed through high school, where he successfully balanced football and basketball, Rivers urged him to focus on basketball, a decision that set the stage for his collegiate success.
While Rivers took on the role of primary caregiver, Mikal’s father, Jack, remained a supportive figure throughout his life. He attended Mikal’s games at Villanova and shared his belief in his son’s skills. “He plays the right way… He’s always worked at it,” Jack said, acknowledging the hard work Mikal had invested in his athletic career.
Before Mikal embarked on his NBA journey, Rivers made one stipulation: he must complete his college education first. True to her word, she prioritised her son’s academic achievements over immediate professional ambitions. Mikal fulfilled this requirement, graduating before being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers, a team Rivers had worked for as vice president of human resources.
The night of Mikal’s draft was bittersweet, as the 76ers traded him to the Phoenix Suns shortly thereafter. Rivers described the experience as an “emotional rollercoaster,” but quickly noted that it ultimately turned out to be for the best, as Mikal thrived in Phoenix, helping lead the Suns to the NBA Finals in 2021.
In 2024, another chapter began when Mikal was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, followed by his recent move to the New York Knicks, where he has continued to shine as a leading player. Rivers maintains a modest but impactful presence in his life, reflecting on how her sacrifice and dedication provided the foundation for her son’s achievements.
Now, Mikal Bridges stands as a testament to an inspiring journey marked by perseverance and support from his mother. As he strides towards potential glory in the NBA Finals, the legacy of Tyneeha Rivers as a devoted mother and a successful professional remains a significant part of his story.
