The original videos, which featured Asiah answering her students’ numerous questions about her personal life, quickly went viral. They were both applauded for their heartfelt authenticity and condemned by some who felt the setting was inappropriate. Responding to a resurgence of interest, Holm has now reposted the videos in celebration of Pride Month, accompanied by the release of her new single, “Love is Love.”
Speaking candidly in an exclusive interview, Asiah explained that her initial conversation with the children was not orchestrated but rather a natural progression from their inquiries. “In many classrooms, it’s completely normal for teachers to share parts of their lives—whether that’s discussing their weekend or displaying family photos,” she said. However, she grappled with the dilemma of whether to continue deflecting questions about her personal life or to open the door to a more honest dialogue.
“It was a pivotal moment for me,” Asiah recalled. “I realised that sharing my truth could lead to a meaningful exchange and challenge assumptions in a way that felt both natural and appropriate for their age.” When she eventually disclosed to her students that she was a lesbian, the response was noticeably different from the backlash she would later encounter online. “What struck me was how swiftly my students transitioned from surprise to curiosity and acceptance,” she noted.
Nonetheless, the discussion also served as a platform to debunk various stereotypes that the students had about queer identities. “A few of them had specific ideas on what a lesbian was supposed to look like and some even thought I was joking,” Holm explained. This highlighted for her how early misconceptions about sexuality can take root.
While the in-class discussion proved enlightening, social media reactions painted a contrasting picture. Critics questioned the appropriateness of discussing sexuality in a classroom context, prompting Holm to confront the double standards surrounding discussions of personal lives by educators. “A heterosexual teacher can casually mention their spouse without raising eyebrows, yet when a queer relationship is referenced, it often spurs controversy,” she observed.
As a result of the ensuing online discourse, school administrators requested that Holm take down the videos, a decision she struggled to accept. “I found it hard not to feel personally affronted,” she admitted. “I had shared numerous classroom moments without issue before this, so it was clear the concern was less about the act of posting and more about the content.”
The emotions surrounding the incident lingered long after the videos were removed. Eventually, these feelings inspired Holm’s new song, “Love is Love,” which she released in June during Pride Month. “Reposting the video felt like reclaiming my voice,” she said, acknowledging that the original decision to remove it left her with unresolved feelings.
Holm’s courage to revisit her past has now led to a heartwarming response from the community. “I’ve been blown away by the support and the number of teachers reaching out to share their own stories,” she remarked. This time, she hopes people understand her intention was never to make a political statement but simply to respond to children’s curiosity honestly.

Now, as she directs her energies towards a career in music and acting from Vancouver, British Columbia, Asiah is dedicated to prioritising authenticity and self-expression. “Writing ‘Love is Love’ allowed me to turn a painful experience into something beautiful,” she concluded. “For me, this journey is about existing openly and encouraging others to do the same.” Through her music and experiences, Holm aims to foster an environment where love, acceptance, and curiosity can thrive without shame.
