Yolen’s daughter, Heidi Stemple, confirmed the news on June 11, 2023, stating that her mother died peacefully, free from pain or distress. The beloved writer, who made significant contributions to children’s literature, died at her home in Hatfield, Massachusetts.
Born on April 17, 1939, in Eugene, Oregon, Yolen began her writing career in 1963 with her debut book, *Pirates in Petticoats*. Over the decades, she established herself as a powerhouse in the literary world, producing a remarkable array of works that included 40 novels, numerous poetry collections, and various book series aimed at young readers. Among her most notable achievements is her Holocaust novella, *The Devil’s Arithmetic*, published in 1988, which earned her the prestigious World Fantasy Award.
