A resident of California has tragically lost their life after contracting leptospirosis, a rare bacterial disease, linked to an RV overrun by wild rats. The incident, which occurred in Berkeley, has raised concerns among local officials regarding the health risks associated with rodent populations in urban areas.

On June 10, Berkeley City Manager Paul Buddenhagen issued a warning highlighting the presence of leptospirosis among the city’s rat community, following the unfortunate death of the individual with connections to the disease. In his briefing, shared with city officials, Buddenhagen urged caution but clarified that leptospirosis presents a very low risk to the broader public.
Leptospirosis, which can be contracted through contact with the urine of infected animals, is infrequently diagnosed in humans. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals at higher risk include those experiencing homelessness or dwelling in environments where exposure to rats or animal waste is possible. This appears to be relevant in the recent case, as the deceased and their partner cohabited in an RV, where they reportedly trapped, fed, and bred wild rats.

Buddenhagen detailed in his memo that the RV, which was situated near the Harrison Street encampment, had become severely infested with rats, posing a serious health threat to its occupants. Both residents of the RV avoided seeking medical attention for several weeks, if not months, after first showing symptoms of the illness. Unfortunately, while one individual succumbed to the disease after being hospitalised, the other did manage to recover with medical intervention.
Following the discovery of the illness, healthcare professionals and local health officials were brought in to address the rat problem. Alameda County Vector Control took immediate action by laying traps around the RV and sealing it to prevent further rodent entry. The team conducted multiple rounds of trapping and testing to ensure complete eradication of the rats. The RV was ultimately towed away and destroyed after thorough checks confirmed that no rodents remained.

Buddenhagen acknowledged that continuous testing by Vector Control indicated an alarmingly high rate of leptospirosis among the local rat population, surpassing urban baselines typically expected for such diseases. However, he reiterated the rarity of person-to-person transmission and noted that there have been no cases of the illness recorded at the encampment itself.
City officials are now considering measures to raise awareness and facilitate further research regarding the rat populations in Berkeley as a preventative strategy against future infections. Buddenhagen’s statement reflects a commitment to public health, emphasising that while the recent death is serious, it resulted from an unusual situation.
Health experts have advised residents to remain vigilant about the risks associated with rodents, especially in areas where rats are prevalent. The city’s assessment highlights the importance of addressing urban wildlife control as a public health priority.
