Her mother had been the subject of extensive scrutiny due to allegations that she suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a disorder that leads caregivers to fabricate or exaggerate illnesses in those they care for. Gypsy, who had endured years of abuse, conspired with her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to end Dee Dee’s life, an action that caught national attention and led to various media portrayals, including the Hulu series “The Act” and the HBO documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest”.
After serving approximately 85% of her sentence, Gypsy was released, expressing eagerness to embrace her newfound freedom. “I’m ready for freedom,” she told PEOPLE shortly after her release. This period of her life is not just about liberation but also about rebuilding from the ground up. Gypsy herself has described the birth of her daughter Aurora, born on December 28, 2024, as a “new beginning,” a sentiment she shared on social media before later deleting the post.
In a reflective Instagram message, she remarked on the anniversary of Dee Dee’s passing, saying, “Today marks 10 years since the death of my mother, a woman known not for love, but for the abuse she inflicted on me.” Through her words, Gypsy conveyed the deep-rooted pain that has shaped her journey, asserting her resolve to break the cycles of abuse for her child. “Aurora… she represents a new beginning… a chance to raise someone with love, truth, and freedom,” she added.
Gypsy’s complex relationship with her mother was fraught with controlling behaviours that Dee Dee exhibited, such as insisting Gypsy use a wheelchair despite her ability to walk and administering medication that created false symptoms of illness. After enduring this traumatic upbringing, Gypsy sought a way out and entered a relationship with Godejohn. Their fatal act was driven by a desperate need for liberation, but it ultimately led to a decade-long incarceration for Gypsy.
In prison, she became engaged to Urker—who had initially reached out to her after watching the documentaries about her life. However, their engagement was briefly called off and later rekindled, illustrating the instability in her life during those years. In 2022, she briefly married Ryan Scott Anderson, but that union ended in a divorce shortly after her release in March 2024.
Since becoming a mother, Gypsy has embraced her role and is focused on creating a nurturing environment for Aurora. Gypsy and Urker’s relationship appears stable, with indications that they are open to expanding their family further in the future via IVF, to ensure that their child does not inherit genetic conditions. “We hope to do IVF sometime in the near future, but right now all our focus is on Aurora,” Gypsy shared.
Additionally, Gypsy has been candid about her physical transformation since her release, discussing efforts to improve her appearance and health. She underwent a rhinoplasty procedure after feeling self-conscious about her nose, a subject of ridicule during her time in prison. Moreover, she attributed her significant weight loss to healthier eating habits and a shift away from junk food that was part of her prison diet.
