**Detection of Rare Lyme Disease Pathogen in New York State Raises Health Concerns**

In a significant development, New York State has reported its first known acquisition of a rare bacterium linked to Lyme disease. The pathogen, identified as Borrelia mayonii, was detected in ticks collected from a residential property in Herkimer County following an incident in which a local resident fell ill.
The infection was confirmed in late June 2025, when the affected individual began to exhibit symptoms typical of tick-borne illnesses. Medical assessments revealed not only an infection with B. mayonii but also the presence of anaplasmosis. The patient received timely treatment with antibiotics, specifically doxycycline, and has since made a full recovery, as covered by various news outlets, including The Independent.

Health officials believe that the case marks a crucial turning point, as the patient had no record of travel, blood transfusions, or organ transplants, suggesting that the infection was indeed acquired locally. Following the diagnosis, researchers from the New York State Department of Health took proactive measures by collecting ticks from the wooded area around the patient’s home, as well as from a nearby forest. Analyses conducted on these ticks confirmed the presence of B. mayonii in several black-legged ticks, commonly known as deer ticks.
Further surveillance efforts have been made to better understand the distribution of the bacterium. Investigators evaluated 1,518 ticks gathered from 24 counties across New York between 2021 and 2025. Strikingly, the only instances of B. mayonii detection were linked to the Herkimer County area associated with the patient’s case. This discovery marks a historic moment for New York, being the first documented finding of the bacterium in state ticks, alongside the first locally acquired human infection.
Experts have observed that Lyme disease typically stems from the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which usually emerges in patients several days to months after being bitten by an infected tick. Symptoms can manifest as fever, headaches, muscle and joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, and a characteristic bull’s-eye rash. However, B. mayonii infections can diverge from these presentations and might even lead to more severe symptoms. Specifically, affected individuals may develop a more widespread rash rather than the singular bull’s-eye pattern, necessitating hospitalisation in certain cases.
The emergence of this rare bacterium in New York raises significant public health questions, with researchers indicating that it is believed to be circulating among local wildlife populations. The implications of this finding underscore the importance of ongoing monitoring and surveillance, which will be pivotal in assessing the potential impact of this pathogen on both human health and animal populations.
“This study provides the first evidence of B. mayonii presence in New York ticks and locally acquired B. mayonii infection in a New York resident,” stated the researchers in their report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
