A Lufthansa flight en route from San Francisco to Munich was forced to divert unexpectedly to Boston on Thursday morning due to an alleged mid-air assault involving a passenger. The incident, which occurred approximately three hours into the journey, was serious enough to disrupt the international flight, prompting a swift response from authorities.

Flight 459 took off from San Francisco International Airport shortly after 10:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday night. As the Airbus A380-800 flew over northern Manitoba, Canada, it made a sudden pivot southward. Initial reports indicated that the aircraft was initially headed towards Chicago before being rerouted to Boston.
Shortly after the diversion, Massachusetts State Police were alerted to the situation aboard the flight. In a statement, a spokesperson confirmed that a female passenger had allegedly attacked another traveller. The individual in question was subdued and handcuffed to her seat for the duration of the flight, ensuring she posed no further risk to the safety of other passengers or crew.
Upon landing at Boston Logan International Airport around 8 a.m. local time, authorities quickly removed the unruly passenger from the aircraft, along with her baggage. As the flight was refuelled, the remaining passengers, totaling 508, awaited the resumption of their journey to Munich.
A spokesperson from Lufthansa emphasised the airline’s commitment to passenger safety, stating, “The reason for the diversion was an unruly passenger who posed a threat to the safe continuation of the flight. The safety of all passengers and crew on board is always Lufthansa’s top priority.” The spokesperson did not confirm whether or not the woman was arrested and noted that investigations into the incident were ongoing.
Although no injuries resulting from the altercation have been reported, the incident adds to an alarming trend regarding in-flight disturbances. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has documented a total of 687 incidents of unruly passenger behaviour so far this year, including a notable spike in May, during which 163 incidents were recorded.
While the number of such disruptive events had previously seen an 80% decline from record levels in 2021, concerns have arisen over a recent resurgence in violence and misconduct on flights. The FAA stipulates penalties of up to £32,000 for such violations, and last year, it imposed a staggering total of £1.875 million in fines related to unruly passenger incidents.
