The spotlight was firmly on Los Angeles on June 9 as stars of the eagerly anticipated film, Toy Story 5, made their way down the red carpet. Notable appearances were made by actors Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, who reprised their cherished roles for this beloved Disney-Pixar franchise. Arriving with their families, both stars reflected on the families they have cultivated in their personal lives while celebrating their artistic achievements.

Tim Allen, 72, who provides the voice for the iconic character Buzz Lightyear, attended the event alongside his loved ones. Allen has two daughters: Katherine, 36, from his previous marriage to Laura Deibel, and Elizabeth, 17, with his current wife, Jane Hajduk, 59. The family posed together, further adding a sense of closeness to the event, which also featured a surprise appearance from pop star Taylor Swift.
Elizabeth expressed her enthusiasm about the film to PEOPLE, sharing her thoughts on the latest addition to the franchise. In a touching reflection, she noted, “It’s cool, I like it,” when asked about her reaction to Toy Story 5. Katherine, who has grown up in the shadow of her father’s famous role, mentioned that she has become accustomed to Allen’s status as Buzz Lightyear, saying, “I am so used to it, he has been a toy since I was six.”
The family dynamics echoed the supportive environment Allen has created, which is indicative of his long-standing connection with Pixar films. During a previous premiere for Toy Story 4, he mentioned that Toy Story 2 remains a family favourite. The film series has played a significant part in their lives, creating treasured memories over the years.
Joan Cusack, who voices the spirited cowgirl Jessie, also graced the red carpet alongside her family. This was a rare public appearance for the actress, who has kept a lower profile in recent years. Notably, Cusack and her husband, Richard Burke, appeared together for the first time in over a decade during the London premiere of Toy Story 5, held just days before in May.
In an interview with Variety at the Los Angeles event, Cusack elaborated on her choice to step back from the limelight, saying, “I think because I’ve worked for a long time… it’s also great to live your life and raise your kids and be in Chicago and be a normal person. It’s kind of priceless.” Her heartfelt words resonate with many parents balancing the demands of fame and family life.
Although the dynamic duo of Woody and Buzz has long been at the forefront of the Toy Story narrative, Allen revealed that Toy Story 5 would place more emphasis on Cusack’s character, Jessie. He hinted at an impressive opening scene featuring Buzz Lightyear and teased a realignment between Woody and Buzz, signalling a compelling development for audiences to look forward to.
In addition to the returning cast, Toy Story 5 introduces new characters to elevate the franchise. Greta Lee will voice a high-tech frog-shaped smart tablet named Lilypad, while Alan Cumming takes on the role of Evil Bullseye, Woody’s horse. Moreover, the film will feature the character Pizza with Sunglasses, with Bad Bunny lending his voice to this intriguing new addition.
Tyla has also been cast to voice an Inflatable Flamingo, specifically for a localized version aimed at Sub-Saharan audiences, showcasing Disney’s commitment to inclusivity and representation in storytelling.
Toy Story 5 is set to hit cinemas on June 19, and the excitement around its release continues to build. With beloved characters, new adventures, and heartfelt family moments, the film promises to bring joy to both old fans and new generations alike, affirming its position in the hearts of many.
