A 17-year-old boy has been hospitalised following a shooting incident on a MARTA train in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday, June 5. The teenager, identified as J’Von Easterling, was reportedly the victim of what authorities have described as a “random and senseless act” of violence while returning from a science and engineering programme at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The shooting occurred just before 7 p.m. local time while Easterling was on a stationary train at the Midtown MARTA station. Reports indicate that he sustained multiple gunshot wounds, resulting in serious injuries to his leg and hand. Fortunately, a crossbody bag Easterling was wearing at the time shielded him from one of the bullets, preventing what could have been a fatal outcome.

According to a GoFundMe page established to assist with his medical expenses, Easterling has already undergone several surgeries on his leg and is expected to require additional treatment on his hand. The page has garnered expressions of support from the community and mentions the young man’s accomplishments, including being a state champion in track and field and an active participant in student government at KIPP Atlanta Schools.
In a statement, KIPP Atlanta Schools expressed their gratitude for Easterling’s recovery, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time. J’Von is an exceptional young man who represents the very best of KIPP Atlanta Schools.” The school community has rallied around Easterling, highlighting his dedication and leadership skills.
Following the incident, authorities arrested Anthony Gresham, a 42-year-old man from Lithia Springs, Georgia, who has been charged with multiple federal offences. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia released details stating that Gresham faces charges of committing an act of violence with intent to inflict serious bodily injury on a mass transit system, as well as possession of ammunition as a convicted felon. He is also accused of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
It is reported that Gresham approached Easterling on the train before firing three shots in his direction. After the shooting, he fled the scene but was apprehended two days later in Douglas County. Gresham has an extensive criminal record, including previous convictions for armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, rendering him ineligible to possess firearms.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in federal court to answer the charges against him. This incident marks a troubling trend of violence occurring on MARTA trains, particularly as it follows another violent episode in which a 25-year-old man, John Elijah Matthews, was alleged to have stabbed a 66-year-old woman to death aboard a MARTA train just a month earlier.
The repeated incidents of violence on public transportation have sparked concern within the community about safety on MARTA services. Passengers and residents are calling for increased security measures to ensure the safety of those who use the transit system.
As J’Von Easterling continues his recovery, his situation highlights broader issues of gun violence and public safety. Efforts to support the young teen through fundraisers and community outreach are underway, as many rally to offer assistance and show solidarity.
As investigations continue, local authorities maintain a firm stance on addressing acts of violence in the community, stressing the importance of safety in public spaces. The community remains hopeful that these incidents will lead to necessary changes in the policies surrounding public transportation safety.
