A recent study has confirmed the existence of an enormous prehistoric scorpion that lived approximately 415 million years ago, making it the largest species of scorpion yet identified. During the Early Devonian Period, life on land was still in its infancy, with many ancestors of modern vertebrates yet to emerge from aquatic environments. This relative lack of competition may have allowed Praearcturus gigas to grow to such formidable sizes. Dr Howard noted, “It suggests that this species might have grown so big because there weren’t any other large predators, allowing it to dominate its environment.”
Palaeontologists believe that Praearcturus gigas likely had a diverse diet, preying on smaller arthropods on land as well as fish and other aquatic creatures. With pincers that could reach around 15 centimetres (approximately 6 inches), this giant scorpion was undoubtedly one of the most significant predators of its time.
