At a recent gathering at the Tribeca Festival, Rider Strong took a nostalgic trip down memory lane as he spoke of his time on the Disney Channel sitcom ‘Girl Meets World’. The event, which included the premiere of the documentary ‘Doc Meets World’, saw Strong reflect on his working relationship with the talented Sabrina Carpenter, who starred in the series as Maya Hart.
Strong revealed that his decision to join ‘Girl Meets World’, a continuation of the beloved series ‘Boy Meets World’, stemmed from his ambition to enter the Directors Guild of America. During a discussion with his former co-stars Danielle Fishel and Will Friedle, he recounted how he had initially dismissed the idea of reprising his role as Shawn Hunter. “I had already written a blog publicly stating I would never do ‘Girl Meets World’,” he admitted. However, after discussions with Michael Jacobs, co-creator of both series, Strong found himself persuaded to join the cast.
The actor recounted that Jacobs had taken him and his wife out to dinner in an attempt to woo him back to the franchise. Strong’s pivotal moment came when he stated, “I will come do some episodes if you let me direct.” This negotiation led to him appearing in two episodes of each of the first two seasons and three in the third season, while also getting the opportunity to direct several episodes.
Reflecting on his time as a director, Strong stated that he found directing far more fulfilling than acting. He appreciated the collaborative atmosphere, emphasising the strong dynamic he had with Carpenter. “Sabrina was unbelievable on set. It was probably one of the best acting relationships I’ve ever had,” he shared. Their working relationship resonated particularly well during episodes that featured original music, showcasing Carpenter’s remarkable talent.
Strong elaborated on a memorable moment during the show’s production when Carpenter would spontaneously bring songs to life during table reads. “We would come in with just lyrics, and she would sing a song on the spot,” he recalled. The show’s composer, Ray Colcord, would then create music that matched her spontaneous performances, illustrating how Carpenter’s natural ability brought an authentic touch to the series.
Danielle Fishel, who played Topanga Lawrence, also expressed her admiration for Carpenter’s talent and wisdom.
