An 8-year-old boy from Wales has been recognised for his quick thinking and bravery after he helped save his grandfather from drowning during a kayaking incident. Marley Jones was on holiday in Fontygary, located in the Vale of Glamorgan, when the ordeal unfolded earlier this month.

Marley and his grandfather, David “Dai” Jones, set out for an enjoyable day of kayaking, but their adventure quickly turned perilous when their kayak capsized. While Dai managed to assist Marley back onto the kayak, he found himself unable to climb back in, causing the duo to drift further away from the shore as currents in the Bristol Channel took over.
In the midst of the crisis, Marley remained remarkably composed and utilised a mobile phone encased in a waterproof bag to reach out to his grandmother. He requested her to inform the authorities of their predicament, a move which ultimately saved his grandfather’s life.
Recalling the tense moment, Marley stated, “When I called my Nan, I told her I was okay, but Granscha looked like he was drowning and we needed help.” His grandmother promptly contacted emergency services after hearing her grandson’s alarmed voice.
Upon receiving the call, HM Coastguard dispatched a lifeboat crew to the area. The search for Marley and Dai commenced, with responders racing towards Limpet Bay. Remarkably, within a mere thirty minutes, the kayak had drifted approximately two and a half miles from its original location.
Dai described the dire situation, admitting, “I was getting tired and cold and there was a point where I wasn’t sure I’d make it. But I was trying to stay positive and keep calm for Marley because I didn’t want him to be frightened.” Fortunately, help was on the way, and he found solace in Marley’s presence.
Andy, a representative from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), praised Marley’s actions, remarking on his maturity throughout the ordeal. “He showed real maturity and stayed level-headed,” Andy noted, highlighting the importance of remaining calm in emergencies.
When the lifeboat arrived, both Marley and Dai felt a significant wave of relief. “Seeing the lifeboat arrive was a huge relief,” Dai expressed. Marley, on the other hand, exclaimed, “I was really happy when the lifeboat arrived. I thought, PHEW!” The pair were subsequently rescued and brought back to shore, where Coastguard volunteers provided necessary medical attention.
In a heartwarming reunion with those who saved them, the Jones family visited the lifeboat station several days later. During this visit, Marley was presented with a bravery medal for his courageous actions. The RNLI also took the opportunity to instruct him on essential water safety skills, such as how to “float to live.”
Andy reiterated the significance of proper preparation while engaging in water activities. “Marley and Dai did exactly the right things when they found themselves in difficulty,” he said, emphasising the need for safety measures such as wearing lifejackets and carrying a mobile phone in waterproof storage. “Despite being prepared, a situation can still turn while at sea, especially with strong currents like those in the Bristol Channel.”
While at the lifeboat station, Dai expressed his gratitude to the first responders. “From the moment the lifeboat arrived, I knew we were in safe hands,” he declared, thankful for the assistance provided during the distressing event.
The experience left a lasting impact on both grandparent and grandchild, with Dai commenting on the pride he felt in seeing Marley receive a medal for his bravery. “Marley was so proud to receive his medal and we’ll never forget it,” he reflected, highlighting the bond they share that was further strengthened through the ordeal.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of water activities and underscores the importance of remaining vigilant and prepared in any recreational pursuit on open water. The actions of young Marley Jones have not only saved his grandfather’s life but also provided a lesson in courage and composure in the face of danger.
