The unfortunate incident occurred when Martinez and a companion were kayaking near the Fifth Street boat landing. While navigating the waters, their kayak began taking on water, ultimately causing them to be separated in rough conditions. Emergency services were alerted to the situation shortly after a local resident reported hearing screams from the lake.

One kayaker, identified as Martinez’s friend, was successfully rescued. Reports indicate that he had drifted approximately 60 yards from the shore towards a dam when he was found clinging to a life jacket. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment. He reportedly shared with rescuers that Martinez had given him the life jacket before they were separated.
Following the incident, the HCSO confirmed that the search for Martinez commenced immediately on May 14. Authorities enlisted the help of various agencies, including the North Carolina Wildlife and Resource Commission, to aid in the recovery efforts. Searchers utilised an extensive array of resources, including drones, sonar technology, and canine teams, to comb the lake and its surroundings.
Unfortunately, after five days of exhaustive searching, officials from Gaston Fire & Rescue announced that operations would begin to scale back. In spite of this, they vowed to continue their efforts to locate Martinez’s body, stating that they were committed to bringing closure to his family.
During the search, the HCSO highlighted the significance of maintaining respect for the area and urged the public to keep Martinez’s loved ones in their thoughts. They acknowledged the emotional toll the incident had taken not only on the family but also on all those involved in the rescue operations, who had dedicated significant time and resources to the search efforts.
